cording agent of the property records in the county, maintains a cross-
index of these records, and issues and records marriage licenses. Acting
as the principal custodian of the records of the various county officials,
h the county court clerk keeps most of their records in his office.
, The circuit court clerk is charged with the responsibility of keeping
records and recording them for the circuit court proceedings. He is also
responsible for maintaining records of certain property transfers. The
circuit court is authorized to order the circuit clerk to make an index
and cross index to all records of the circuit court in the county (Civil
_ Code, sec. 513).
In 1864 an act was passed to pay the county court clerk of Knox County
. for recopying the eommissioner's books, years 1861-62, which had been taken
V from the sheriff and destroyed. These books had been copied on order of
_ the county judge (Acts of the General Assembly of 1864, ch, 493, secs, 1,
_ _ 2, p. 462). '
Record systems used by the county officials, with the exception of those
, records maintained by the county health office, the county tax commissioner,
_ and the county school superintendent, are those that were designed and a-
dopted by the county for its particular needs. The record forms of the a-
foresaid offices are provided by their respective state departments and are
_ kept in accordance with instructions of those departments.
