what a big game this is." 'Bama's coach said in his post-game press conference. "Certainly, its a big game for us to come into Rupp Arena: 1 would not minimize the game. But I do believe, however, that you take one game at a time, and you never tell your kids that this is the biggest game of their lives because there are 15 more. Every win you have over a conference team is just as important as the other win or the other loss."
Folks, whether you love or hate the man. whether you love to shout obscenities his way or feel sorry for him. or whether you think he's silly or funny to look at. one thing's for suregood ole Wimp can coach basketball.
"This is one of those rare moments, to sit in front of a microphone and in front of Kentucky writers and brag on your team."

indulging in thumbing his nose at (some) Kentucky fans.
What is unfortunate is that Jock is right when he says he says I things just to cause a knee jerk reaction among (some) | Kentucky fans. Works every time.
Bits 'n pieces
Best on the road. If Kentucky's Rex Chapman is not the best freshman in college basketball, then certainly the 6-5 rookie is the premier "road player." In front of hostile crowds at Indiana, Louisville and Auburn, Chapman scored 26, 26 and 24 points.
v Fan mail for Chapman. When the mail arrived one day last week the UK freshmen received 90 letters.
Having made his debut on national television against Louisville Chapman is drawing more accolades, more com-parisions.
Georgia coach Hugh Durham: "Chapman just doesn't play like a freshman, that's all."
Tennessee coach Don DeVoe: "Without question they have got the finest point guard freshman in America in Rex Chapman."
f University of Louisville basketball analyst Jack Tennant, a native of West Virginia, says Chapman reminds him of Jerry West.
Postscript: After UK's loss to Alabama last week some disgruntled UK fans were chiding the media for overrating Chapman. Said one: "Comparing Chapman to Jerry West is just plain silly."
Comment: Gee, and I thought that even Jerry West was a college freshman once upon a time.
Parting shot
When a reporter asked Penn State coach Joe Paterno what he was thinking as Miami set up to run the final play of the national championship game in the Fiesta Bowl, he replied: "I wasn't thinking of much. I was just watching, to see what was going to happen. I was tempted to pray, but I think He has better things to do than worry about a football game."

squad's man-to-man defense shut down UK's offensive game plan. "We got on the offensive boards as well. We put it together on both ends of the floor. All the little things we worked on for this game came together."
Trailing 24-19, Miller (originally dubbed the Shpotist by TCP two weeks ago) drained a three-pointer. It was the closest the 'Cats had been since they trailed 7-6 with 17-12 left. He paced UK in the first half with 12 points, including 2 of 4 from three-poinl territory.
Alabama upped its lead by five when Ansley and McKey scored consecutive hoops.
Again it was Miller bombing from beyond 19' 9". With his chin resting on his hand Sanderson watched in disblief when Miller's basket cut the deficit to two. 24-22.
Three times24-23. 26-25, 30-29did Kentucky pull within one. A James Jackson free throw then gave the visitors a two-point cushion with only four ticks remaining.
Davender then lofted a 25-foot despiration attempt which missed badly. Miller, hustling all the way, tipped the ball in, but the officials said time had expired.
Crimson Tide-Wildcat Tidbits
The regular-season loss for Kentucky was the first for Eddie Sutton in Rupp Arena. It also tied the mark for the worst defeat ever by a Kentucky team in the 23,000-seat gym. They (UK) never got three baskets in a row. We answered their baskets and that was a big key.". . .Richard Madison paced the 'Cat attack with 15 points. Derrick Miller scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half. .Credit Mike Gottfried and Jim Farmer for holding Rex Chapman, UK's leading scorer, to only nine points. PREDICTION: Johnny Majors will be asked why, if he had so many great players. Tennessee lost five games in 1985. Typical Majors' quotes made before the Liberty Bowl on offensive guard Harry Galbreath: "He's the most aggreassive and dominating run blocker I've been around. There is every reason to believe that Galbreath. next year, will be the finest offensive guard Tennessee has ever produced." ... On wide receiver Joey Clinkscales: "Joey is as good catching the ball over his shoulder as anybody you'll find in college football." ... On wide receiver Anthony Miller: "In only one season at Tennessee he has shown as much potential for being an exciting player as anybody in college football." ... On quarterback Jeff Francis: "I don't know when I've had a sophomore quarterback who did a better job in his first year as a starter."
PREDICTION: Majors will be invited to appear on HBO's new comedians show when they see this oneOn benefits of Liberty Bowl visit: "It gives the players a chance, to stay on campus and be in mine-terms and do some good academic work." How's that again, Johnny?
The Last Word: With credit to sportwriter Larry Guest, a columnist for the Orlando Sentinel: "Auburn is giving Citrus Bowl tickets to (Brent) Fullwood's profs so they'll finally get to see him in person."
