Mr. L. N, Perkins, manager of the Weteriels Control Department,
has requested that vo furnish them with o request for an inventory
budget for the Fiscal year of l9hB. The ottsohed sample form out-

fiscal yeer, please base them on full production or about 720,000
to 750,000 tous.
We are qmwious to get es reelistie budget as possible and we
quote the following paragraphs from Hr. Perkins' letter in order
that you may know the emphasis thet is being pleoed on these
estimates:
"The disbursewent goal of the budget should be besed on epproved
production schedules ord the invtttory joel should provide for the
minimum ewouut of investment reluirod to support these production
schedules.
"To meet the objective of the over—all company budget, it is our
opinion that moot Works should improve the inventory turnovev in
1QhB over that as estoblished for the lQQ7 budget. The goel should
be rousonsblo under normal operations and a budget established that
can be mot through ·*·_ control of production end inventories.
"An important step towards e suocessfol control of inventory is
hoviu; e reelistio budget thoroughly analyzed sod agreed to by
ell operating persoune1."
Please submit the three attached exhibits to this office not later

Hr. Burn , in his Economy report for November l§h8, states that
no report can oe made as to the status of the inventory because the
budget has not been received. '
he have just received from the Supply and Inventory Division
our budget figures for the end of each month to February 28, l9h9,
indicating by that time they expect a reduction of 8.2% overall in
the Steel Division inventory. They have, also, asked that an exhioit
oe furnished for your total figures as of the end of each month in
accordance with the attached sample to be furnished them by the end
of next week. will you, therefore, please f rnish us with your figures,
prepared according to the sample giving us your best estimate of your
inventory, disbursements, etc., as of the first of each month up to
March l, l9h9. As I stated, the goal set for the Steel Division is a
reduction of 8.23 and I trust you will make every effort possible to
reduce your inventory in accordance therewith. sill you, also, please
have Mr. Griggs furnish us with the required statement so that we may
combine it with the Steel dill and forward to the Supply and Inventory
Division.

 J. B. Parker, Div, Compt, Dec. gg, l9L8
Attached is our estimated Monthly Schedule of Inventories,
Disbursements and Turnovers, requested in your letter of December lh,
19LB. These figures are based on all inventories listed on our
Trial Balance with the exception of Coal Sbock #2 Mine and Coal Soles
Inventory. _
Although the schedule shows an inventory reduction of approx-
Lndtely $2l,OO0.00 from Nbvemter 1 to Merch 1, this figure is not `
indicative of our actual reduction of operating inventory. For example,
the Comnissary Inventory is a seasonal figure and much of the indicated
reduction is a result of the sale of the heavy christmas stock purchased
some time ago. On operating inventories, such as Stores, Mr. Cempbell
estimates a reduction of $8,00G.OO from the period November l to March
1, l9L9, This would be an approximate 6.L% reduction, Every effort
will continue to be made to keep our inventories at an operating minhmum.

 Mr. Peterson:
Attaching inventory comparison which shows an
increase of $15579.15 over our 1948 Inventory. You
will notice an increase of $1740.07 on Iron and Steel
because we took a lot of recovered I Beams into our
Stores Inventory. The increase of $11411.56 on
Railroad Cars is for plain and fabricated Sheets for
the Railroad Car Shop which were not too easily obtained
until the past year. The increase of $6858.56 for
Explosives and Caps represents the amount carried in
Stores Inventory which was formerly handled by the
Commlssary Department.
We are contlnulrg to stock new items each
month.
I Mr. Parker asked to see this comparison when
he was here last year. Am enclosing an extra copy
ln case you think he would like to see lt.
