Subject: Interchange of Freight Cars with Trucks Having Side Frames of ”I", “L" or
"T" Section Design,
TO THE MEMBERS AND PRIVATE CAR CMNERS,
Your attention is directed to the requirement which has appeared in Paragraph
(t—3—b) of Interchange Rule 3 for a number of years, to the effect that after
specified date cars having truck side frames of "I", "L" or "T" section design
would be prohibited in interchange,
Due to the car supply situation the effective date of this requirement has
been extended from year to year for several years,
Paragraph (t—3~f) with respect to repair patches or reinforcing plates applied
to truck side frames was incorporated in Interchange Rule 3 in l9h7 and this date
has also been extended from year to year because of the car supply situation,
Since truck side frames so constructed and so reinforced are not as substantial
as frames of "U" section design in good condition, it would benefit the service if
no further extensions for these requirements would be made beyond January l, 1952,
I have been requested, therefore, to solicit information from all car owners as to
the number of cars, by classes, in general interchange service equipped with trucks
having "I", "T" or “L" section truck side frames, as of August l, l950, and the
program expectations as to the number of such cars which will be equipped with "U"
section truck side frames and the number of such cars which will be retired from
service by January l, 1952,
Information is also desired as to the number of cars, by classes, in general
interchange service, as of August l, 1950, equipped with cast steel truck side
frames to which repair patches or reinforcing plates have been applied,
A form for reporting this information is attached hereto in duplicate. Please
return one copy of this completed form not later than October 9, l950.
Yours very truly,
    '/_ ")

It has been called to our attention that there
are two IHCX cars numbered juli" We will appreciate your
checking into this as we note that back in December car
jul was shipped on December l2 and again December 15a,J
which obviously is ah"érror and some car other than jul
is mistakenly belng used as jul. We do not appear to
have a recent record of the movement of the car, our
most recent record being January 28 and the one previous
January 2. These two dates, of course, appear to be the
normal movement for the car. Please let us know what
you develop.

In answering your questions in our telephone conversation
of May 25th, regarding IHCX cars on Receiving and Forwamied Report,
I give you the following;
· Car No. Z;63 ··- we find that we shipped this car on March
lhth, but our reports do not report it on the l5th as per our telephone
conversation. will you please check again and advise.
Car No, 267 — We find on our report of May 17th car No, 287
reported as being received should have been car No, 267. Our report
of May l8th shows that No. 267 was shipped out as of that date. We
do not find wherethacar was listed as being shipped on May l6th as
per telephone conversation. Would you also investigate this further?
Car No. 688 - we find that our report of May l8th lists car
No. 688 as being shipped as of that date, Our report of Hay 19th also
list car No, 688, which should have been No. 668. I believe this
infomation will clarify the question concerning this car.
From the above you will note in the first two instances
will need further information in order to correct the receiving and
shipping of the car numbers.
I em also enclosing a cgrrected copy of the car report for
Hay 23, which we also discussed §lI1 the telephone conversation. with
this corrected copy we believe you will be able to reconcile your
records. We will be glad to furnish you further information if required,
