Biography/History

U.S. Senator. James, a native of Crittenden County, Ky, became a lawyer in 1891, following in his father's footsteps. He involved himself in Kentucky Democratic politics at an early age. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1903-1911. He won election to the U.S. Senate in 1912, and served as permanent chairman of the 1912 and 1916 Democratic National Conventions. He died in 1918, while campaigning for a second term.

Scope and Content

These are two accessions of the papers of Ollie M. James. 1VF58M10 includes an invitation, correspondence, and clippings. The correspondence is with the following: Joseph Tumulty, Champ Clark, Lucius Pinkham, Henry Watterson, and Woodrow Wilson. A letter from Wilson seeks James' "counsel and guidance." The accession 1M66M9 consists of campaign literature, speeches, official reports and numerous newspaper clippings. It has Democratic Party material pertaining to Woodrow Wilson's record early in his first administration. The accession also contains copies of the following published works: 1914 DEMOCRATIC TEXTBOOK, the 1915 CAMPAIGN HANDBOOK OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, and THE TARIFF ACT OF OCTOBER 3, 1913. In addition this accession contains a pair of eyeglasses in a case from Edmonds of Washington.
