[Identification of item], William Jennings Price papers, 1851-1952, 1M53M4, Special Collections, University of Kentucky. Minister to Panama, lawyer, historian. Born and raised in Kentucky, William Jennings Price served as the Minister to Panama from 1913 to 1921. He later served as legal counsel of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation from its inception in 1933 until his retirement in 1944. At one time he was a professor of law at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky and maintained an interest in Danville and early Kentucky history. These papers deal primarily with Price's activities as United States Minister to Panama, legal counsel to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and as local historian of Danville, Kentucky. Correspondence comprises most of the collection and shows Price's contact with leading figures of the day including Alben Barkley, William Jennings Bryan, James F. Byrnes, George W. Goethals, Warren G. Harding, Charles Evans Hughes, Robert Lansing, Maksim Litvinov, James C. McReynolds, and Harry S. Truman. Newsclippings cover Price's work in Panama, attendance at social events and his marriage to Beatrice Detweiler in August 1931. The collection also includes photographs (removed to Photo Archives) and letters discussing Danville's claim of initiating the first post office in pioneer Kentucky.
