It includes thirty-four notebooks of farm records, including 2 volumes of records of horses sold, 1886-1893; 11 volumes of breeding records, 1882; 18 bank books, 1892-1915; 2 cash books, 1904-1912; and an address book dating from 1895 (53M96). The rest of the material (64M40) consists of the personal and business correspondence of Pepper and his family and the family of his wife, Elizabeth Starling Pepper. There are about 300 letters written to Laura Pugh Starling; around 200 pieces of business papers, correspondence concerning custody of Lyne Starling Goedecke, and personal correspondence, all belonging to Laura Starling Pepper; and about 100 pieces each relating to Mahala Edwards Pepper Goedecke and her husband, Frederick Goedecke. There is a genealogical chart in Box 1 and a scrapbook in Box 2.370 items relate to Thomas L. Smith, who married Lyne Starling Pepper. One group of 10 letters was written while Smith served as an Army map maker in the Philippine Islands in 1903 and 1904. An amateur photographer, he printed cyanotypes and brown prints of island scenes directly onto his stationery.
