Hardin papers, 1907-1939, 1919-1920 (bulk dates), 1M87M38, Special Collections, University of Kentucky.Judge, attorney, politician. Charles A. Hardin, a resident of Harrodsburg, Ky. and an unsuccessful candidate for Congress, served a term of 10 years as commonwealth attorney, and was then elected as circuit court judge of the Thirteenth judicial district of Mercer County for 22 years (1910-1932). Following his retirement from the bench, Hardin was appointed chairman of the Democratic State Central committee by Governor A. O. Stanley. This collection contains correspondence, newspaper clippings and miscellaneous items pertaining to the career of Charles A Hardin, a Kentucky judge and politician. Most of the materials present are from the period when Hardin was Chairman of the Democratic State Committee. The papers are of a political nature, including correspondence from A.O. Stanley, Ollie M. James, Woods Walker, James Campbell Cantrill, Ethel Gist Cantrill, George Lee Willis and Seldon R. Glenn. The many clippings and typed speeches reflect Hardin's concern with the rising crime rates in Kentucky and Mercer County during his tenure as judge. While Chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee, the subject of much of the correspondence concerned women's suffrage. A typed copy of the Democratic National Committee resolution (1919)to help further the ratification of the Woman's Suffrage Amendment is present. Also included are political broadsides, programs, pamphlets, a mortgage agreement, pages from a logbook and a photograph of an unidentified sailor.Arranged by material type.Hardin, Charles A, fl. 1920.James, Ollie M.
