Vitale & UK: Part I
Dear Sir:
1 can't believe another year has passed and it's time to renew my subscription. Boy. what a difference a year makes.
Looking back to 1987 renewal time. I was full of hope for a national title in basketball and a full house of top-quality players for the 1988-89 season. But guess what, our 'Cats got upset by some 'Cats from the East (Villanova) and it was wait till next year.
After the upset, the roof fell in: King Rex (Chapman) jumped to the pros, the money fell out. Prop 48 took its toll and the investigation and conviction.
Did I say conviction? Yes. 1 did. Kentucky's Wildcats have been found guilty by Motor Mouth Dick Vitale. the national media and Ttie Kentucky Kernel (the University of Kentucky's independent student newspaper). This before any facts have been made public.
I thought in the good old U.S. you are innocent until proven guilty. But not Kentucky's Wildcats, we are already guilty.
If we are guilty of the charges brought forth by the NCAA, make them public, fire those responsible, hand out our punishment and let the fans of the Kentucky program get on with life.
I hope, if we are guilty, that our public probation for the last few months will be considered as time served.
Sometimes out of the ashes of disaster comes a new and better life. In either case (guilty or innocent). Kentucky's \\ ildcats w ill rise again to the top.
The Illinois 'Cat.
Charles Pirozzoli Effingham, 111.
Editor's note: Although we agree with most of your comments, Charles, wt> would like to correct you on a couple counts. Although it is true that some i:' the national media have already tried and convicted Kentucky basketball. Dick Vitale and the Kentucky Kernel have not. Both have asked for Eddie Sutton's resignation, but neither did so based on his guilt or innocence. Vitale has said on a number of
occasions, including bis pregame comments before the UK-Duke game, that he has no idea whether I'K is guilty or innocent of any of the NCAA's charges. He only said that because ol all the unrest, had publicity and stigma that exists, Sutton and his staff should step aside for the good of
the program. A few weeks later, the Kernel
came to the same conclusion.
Vitale & UK: Part II
Dear Sir:
Mr. Combs, in response lo Dick Vitale's, yours and a few others' suggestions that Eddie Sutton should resign. I say HOGWASH"'
First ol all. let me remind everyone that a person should always he considered innocent until proven guilty. And lo date, there has been no evidence against anyone, including coach Sutton 1 sincerely hope that our state university is above finding someone guilty without evidence.
Secondly. Mr. Combs, Vitale and others, you suggest that coach Sutton should retire innocent or guilty because of the black cloud over the program. 1 suggest that Eddie Sutton, whom I consider to be the best coach in the country today, should be given the opportunity to lead this program out from under that black cloud, somewhat similar lo another coach who was the greatest who ever lived. It was that coach who was also gi\en an opportunity to escape a black cloud, and his name u.i^ -\dolph Rupp
Thank you.
John Colson Louisville

Editor's note! \s was explained in the previous editor's note. Vitale and others have called for Sutton's resignation. But aside from columnist Earl Cox and a few of those who responded to The Cats' Pause questionainnaire, no one else at 'IX'P, and certainly not Oscar Combs, has asked for Sutton's resignation.
fhmm.
OK, let's get this straight: Yes, Dick Vitale (left) did call for the resignation of Eddie Sutton (right), but TCP editor/publisher Oscar Combs has not. Vitale, however, has gone out of his way to make it clear that he hasn't convicted anyone. It's his opinion that Sutton and the coaching staff should have stepped down before the season beganinnocent or guilty.
