An keeping with the continued emphasis that athletics director Cliff Hagan has placed on the academic life of its student-athletes, the University of Kentucky Department of Athletics opened its new Academic Learning Center in Memorial Coliseum.
The Center contains a large study area, a casual reading lounge, an individual reading aids center, graduate assistant offices, a career center and several tutoring rooms.
Bob Bradley, assistant to the athletics director for academic affairs, said the Center provides many services to the student-athlete, foremost of which is a diversified reading program that covers everything from a complete diagnosis of reading, reading study skills and speed reading.
"Athletics has acquired the assistance of a professor in UK's graduate reading program to coordinate what should be the best reading clinic available to athletes, comparable to any in the nation," Bradley said.
He said Hagan has always taken a special interest in his department and has gone the "extra mile" to ensure that UK athletes graduate. "There is no doubt in my mind that Mr. Hagan has the student-athlete's best interest at heart," he said. "The new Academic Learning Center is a prime example of his concern."
In addition to Hagan, Wildcat Basketball Coach, Joe B. Hall is totally committed to academic success for his athletes.
"The atmosphere of the Kentucky program lends to academic success," Hall said. "Our athletic program is an outgrowth of our curriculum. Our athletes are here not only to participate in sports, but most importantly to be full time students and to earn their degree.
"We encourage them in every way possible, and through every method available, we try to see to it that they are conscientious and that they obtain the most they can from their academic opportunities."
"We have had an excellent advising and tutoring program for several years," he said, "and we're very happy that they have such an outstanding facility to use now. Our athletes now have the best system and the best surroundings to assist them with their studies."
