Who Is Kollege Kingpin In Kentucky?
We May Find Out December 10th
Chamionship of Kentucky and things. The title "Kingpin in Kentucky" this season may belong to the winner of a college basketball game to be played Dec. 10 in Bowling Green.
That's the night the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers play the Louisville Cardinals at E.A. Diddle Arena.
Western is no flash in the pan this season. Change in the Hilltoppers? The players have matured, play more under control. The coaching is better. As he demonstrated in the NIT Murray Arnold is a "situation man." He knows precisely when

and how to juggle personnel. And just as important when to say "time out!" and when not to.
'Mister Bubble and the Beasts'
Yes, the Western Hilltoppers are something special this year, folks.
Coach Arnold has a club that goes 10 men deep without any pain and he uses them too.
The "Mr. Bubble" is junior playmaker James McNary. The husky kid from Owensboro is the stick that stirs the drink, but the top weapon in the arsenal is Western's "Beasts of the Baseline" 6-9 Kannard Johnson, 6-8 Clarence Martin and 6-10 Tellis Frank.
In fact, NBA director of scouting Marty Blake rates Frank as one of the best NBA prospects coming out of college next spring.
"I think he's one of the best sleepers. One of the best of the unknowns," Blake said, adding that he also likes Fred Tisdale and Kannard Johnson.
"Tisdale can become a bigtime player," he said. "And Johnson is a first round (draft) talent who can go just as far as he wants to go. He could be among the top 30 players coming out. It's up to him."
Frank is a big, mobile fellow who has good hands, handles the ball (against the press), and shoots from midrange very well.
"Coach calls us big guys the beasts of the baseline and that's what we've been so far, beasts of the baseline," Frank said last week. "I feel like we've got a great coach who keeps us on our toes."
Does Western belong in the top 20?
"I think we deserve to be in the Top 20, yes," Frank said. "I don't think it makes much difference where, but I think we do.
"I believe we're going to be a great ball club," he added. "I don't know how great we can be, but we're going to play hard. We're fighters. Yeah, I think we're going to be all right." And Frank knows what wins basketball games too. "Defense is our ticket and we know it," he said. "That's what's going to make us a good ball club this season."
'Mr. Bubble' McNary likes the way things are this season too. 'The coach is exciting," he said. "Thing is, coach knows how to handle young, immature guys and that makes a big difference you see. He loves the game. And you got to love him too."
Quite a legacy and collection of talent Clem Haskins left for Murray Arnold. Seems Mr. Bubble and the Beasts of the Baseline have grown up. Nothing to do now but see just how far Western's Hilltoppers can go.
Prediction The 1986-87 Hilltopper team is going to prove out to be the finest Western team in 15 years, since 1971 when the Jim McDaniels-led 'Toppers went to the Final Four.
Western will be back in the NCAA Tournament next spring and it won't be one of those "we're just happy to be here" trips either.
Louisville
The Cardinals looked more green than red losing to Northeastern last week. Generally, the Cards' backcourt play was alarmingly poor and, excepting Herbert Crook, the forward play wasn't much better. Coach Denny Crum was telling the truth when he said his team was overrated.
And yet, on Dec. 10 the Kingpin of Kentucky could emerge ... from Bowling Green.
Bill Ransdell
How much do football fans in Elizabethtown think of native son Bill Ransdell?
The mayor of Elizabethtown received a letter last week from a gentleman who asked to remain.anonymous. .Expressing his "appreciation for Ransdell's contributions to UK football and to his home community the last four years.
How about proclaiming a "Bill Ransdell Day?"
"Bill has acquitted himself well both on and off the playing field and has made a tremendous number of people in this community proud of him," the man wrote. "The name Elizabethtown, Kentucky has been used in connection with Bill hundreds of thousands of times over the past four years and the publicity value to this community has been enormous."
The man suggested that someone might sponsor a banquet, ask UK Coach Jerry Claiborne to speak. It would "sell enough tickets to finance the entire operation and present Bill with a proclamation from Your Honor or a resolution from the City Counsel and perhaps the Elizabethtown School Board."
Mayor Carroll's reaction? "Sounds like a wonderful idea to me. The boy has certainly help put Elizabethtown on the map."
The Mayor was wondering, though, who might be interested in taking care of the arrangements.
Stay tuned. Kentucky xMr Football' update
In this space a week ago it was reported that at the end of the 1987 season prep football in our state would have its first Mr. Football.
An update: Larry Vaught Danville Advocate-Messenger, president of The Associated Press Sports Editors Association, said last week that a Mr. Football for 1986 will be selected next spring so that Kentucky will have a Mr. Football in the Kentucky-Tennessee all-star game next summer at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.
Top candidates? How about tight end Ken Ellis (Louisville Male), tight end/linebacker Frank Jacobs (Newport Central Catholic), and wide receiver Eddie Thomas (Fort Knox)?
Footnote Thomas, who will make a decision on his college choice in the spring, said last week he had narrowed the field to eight schools (then named seven) Georgia, Kentucky, UCLA Indiana, Purdue, Vanderbilt and Army.
Footnote II Thomas received a telegram earlier this month It said simply: "Nobody wants you more than Georgia does Signed, Coach Vince Dooley."
'More Marty Blake'
The NBA chief scout was on his way to see Todd May at Pikeville.
"Where the hell is Pikeville?" he said, adding that some pro teams like May's potential. "This kid could be starting for Kentucky right now."
^ On Winston Bennett: If he had he not been hurt, "Bennett could have been a first round pick in the '87 NBA draft."
On James Blackmon: "He's a good player, could be picked in the top two rounds. I don't know if can he shoot or not?"
* Blake's view of the top NBA prospects for next spring David Robinson (Navy), Kenny Smith (North Carolina), Christian Welp (Washington), Tony White (Tennessee), Reggie Williams (Georgetown), Greg Anderson (Houston), Horace Grant (Clemson), Kannard Johnson (Western Kentucky), Choo Kennedy (Oklahoma), Reggie Miller (UCLA) and Steve Alford (Indiana).
* On former UK star and Cleveland Cav center Melvin Turpin: "I heard he went swimming this summer and some body tried to harpoon him."
Setting the record straight
I have been accused of a number things since being asked to occupy this space in TCP three years ago. But lately, some of the allegations are, well, interesting.
The column Oscar Combs asked me to write was supposed to be "national" in scope, not "statewide" as has been repeatedly implied. The majority of sports fans today are too well informed to be insulted with homerism whether it be in The Cats Pause or wherever.
 About being anti-UK? pro-UofL ... anti-this ... pro-that Baloney. ^
A smattering of other 'take it or leave it' views...
College coaches being paid for what kind of shoes school's athletes wear is ludicrous and is not analogous to professor acting as a consultant to, for example, a research company.
* Sports writers in this area of the country are fortunate to work in the midst of high caliber, nationally competitive sports It ought to be fun. Most times it is.
Winston Bennettconsidering his grades and performance on a basketball flooris the epitome of a college stu dent/athlete.
It's too bad about Todd Ziegler. *s Too bad about Jim Griesch.
Sports items in this space are to inform, entertain, present a candid point of view for fans to consider, challenge and/or disagree with, nothing more.
When Kentucky plays at Louisville this year, the Cardinals will win, maybe in double figures.
