*For the first time in over three decades Kentucky and Louisville met in a regular-season basketball game and the 'Cats pulled out all the stops to post a 65^44 win over the Cards at Rupp Arena. Jim Master and Melvin Turpin led the point parade with 19 and 16 points, respectively, but the big news was the return of Sam Bowie, who hauled down a game-high 10 rebounds in his first action in more than two years after recovering from a leg injury.
*Coaches of the SEC continued to disagree on where the tournament should be held each year, at a neutral site or on a college campus. The recent issure was raised because Vanderbilt has been selected for the 1984 tournament. Come coaches preferred it be played in Birmingham. The tourney committee, however, voted to bring the event back to Birmingham in 1985.

*It was a big week for the Kentucky Wildcat basketball team. First they traveled to South Bend, Ind., to play the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Irish backers tried every trick in the book, including hanging a banner that said "Freedom Hall North" and passing out Kentucky Fried Chicken hats that said "I Like Kentucky Fried." But none of that worked as the 'Cats shot an unbelievable 75 percent from the field, paced by Derrick Hord's seven for eight for 18 points, in their convincing 58-45 victory over Notre Dame. This was a total team effort as UK played like a well-oiled machine.
Irish coach Digger Phelps said after the game, ". . .they will be a threat to be in the Final Four."
Then on Sunday afternoon, in front of 23,884 fans at Rupp Arena and a national television audience, the Wildcats of Kentucky

impressively destroyed the Wildcats of Villanova 93-78. It was a battle of two teams ranked in the Top Five in the nation and it was an exciting game to watch. Kentucky's red-hot shooting, as in the Notre Dame game, was the difference as UK shot 63.6 percent from the floor compared to Villanova's 40.5 percent. Derrick Hord was very impressive as he led all scorers with 26 points and also grabbed seven rebounds to lead UK in that category. UK is now 3-0 for the year.

*The Kentucky basketball team was handed its first defeat of the year, a 68-67 overtime loss to Indiana in a game played in Bloomington. The game came just days after Hoosier coach Bobby Knight had suspended three players from the team and placed five more on probation for violating team rules. UK led 58-55 with 1:57 to go in regulation when Indiana's Michael Woodson scored a three-point play. Kentucky went for the final shot, but had to settle for a desperation 25-footer by Chuck Aleksinas. The Hoosiers then won in overtime by getting all but two of their points in the extra period from the line. Aleksinas led UK with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kyle Macy scored 11 points.

*Trying to make ammends for a disastrous 13-13 season last year, the UK Wildcat basketball team opened up the season with a 97-90 romp over Northwestern in Memorial Col-
iseum. All-American candidate Kevin Grevey led the 'Cats with 32 points. Freshman James Lee came off the bench to tally 11.
*Senior forward Bob Guyette came to the rescue as Kentucky scored an 80-70 win over Miami of Ohio in a game played in Oxford. The game was closer that the score would indicate. UK fell behind early when Miami reeled off the game's first 10 points. UK trailed 67-65 with five minutes left. Guyette chipped in 17 points, many coming at crucial times.

*In the first road trip of the year, Kentucky held off a late rally by seventh-ranked North Carolina to down the Tar Heels 94-87. Mike Pratt added 27 points and 16 rebounds.
"Pratt and Issel are just tremendous," said Tar Heel coach Dean Smith. "This is the best defensive team I've seen at UK."

away about four plays this season and UK probably ends up with a nice bowl appearance and an impressive 8-3 record. Let it also be said that Kentucky has a proven winner in Jerry Claiborne. His winning percentage is one of the best in the country. In fact, his off-the-field record isn't too shabby, either. Kentucky has consistently placed more players on the SEC all-academic team than any other school in the league the past few years. Also, keep in mind that his overall record at UK would be a glittering 25-19-1 if you take away that first season which he had little material to work with, along with a murderous schedule. Furthermore, it should be pointed out that his program has never come under the scrutiny of the NCAA, unlike LSU, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Georgia and Florida. That's under a five-year time period.
Following UK's loss at Tennessee, Claiborne was quoted as saying, "We're close, but we gotta work at getting better to make it happen." Yes indeed, UK is closevery close to making it happen and reaching the level it wants to attain in the SEC. But it needs to make it happen from the players themselves, the coaching staff, the fans and the UK administration. The new Nutter Training Facility was a giant step in the right direction and should be a valuable asset in recruiting. And recruiting this year is a must, especially coming off a .500 record and trying to lure a bumper crop of 20 or so high school prospects in the state. Claiborne has a goal that it can be done at the University of Kentucky. Two years ago it was on the threshold of greatness, but recently it has received a major setback. In order to believe in that goal, a few changes will be needed. But he needs a total commitment, starting with the administration and leading to the players. Without it, the goal will never be reached. Now is the time to start reaching toward that goal.
