?Kentucky sophomores Dirk Minniefield and Sam Bowie shared Most Valuable Player Awards and Minnifield and Chuck Verderber walked away with most of the hardware at the annual Kentucky Awards Dinner held at the Hyatt Regency and sponsored by the Committee of 101. Minnifield also won awards for best defensive player and most assists. Verderber won the 110 percent award and The Chandler Trophy. Bowie won the rebound award. Chris Gettlefinger, Fred Cowan, Dicky Beal and Charles Hurt were other award winners.
?Defense highlighted Kentucky's football scrimmage as the team completed its second week of spring practice. The offenses were able to score only twice against an inexperienced, but swarming, defense. Quarterbacks Terry Henry and Tommy Boyle engineered the touchdown drives. Lawrence
"Choo Choo" Lee was the leading rusher in the game with 64 yards.
?Reliever Jeff Keener did the job again, putting out the fire in the sixth inning as Kentucky took the second game of a doubleheader with Georgia by a 7-6 score. The Bulldogs won the first game 4-2. UK came back to take the third game of the series with a four-run, two-out rally in the ninth inning to win 8-6. The big hit was a two-run triple by Jeff Sikes. The score was knotted 4-4 entering the ninth. Georgia battled back in the ninth against Keener, who had his scoreless streak snapped at 30 consecutive innings. After Keener walked the bases loaded in the ninth, Bob Silvanik came in and allowed Georgia only two runs. UK also defeated Georgia Tech (16-9), Eastern (6-4) and Morehead (13-2) during the week. Jeff Shartzer clubbed two homers in the Morehead game.

?The UK baseball team enjoyed its best offensive performance of the year, spraying 22 hits in romping past Austin Peay 13-5. Mark Hredzak had two triples for the Bat Cats. Jeff Shartzer had a homer and a double and Mike Botkin had two doubles and five RBIs.
?For the second straight year, the Kentucky basketball staff harvested a banner crop in recruiting, as the 'Cats picked up four prize prospects. The tallest of the lot is 6-11 center Melvin Turpin, who played his high school ball at Lexington Bryan Station before attending Fork Union Military School last year. The shortest of the new Wildcats is 5-11 guard Dicky Beal of Covington Holmes High School. Beal's signing is somewhat of a surprise. He had previously announced that he would attend DePaul, but when the Big Blue came calling, Beal had a change of heart. Kentucky also went to Harborfield High School in New York and came back with 6-9 forward Bret Bearup, a consensus high school All-American. Another blue-chip performer signed by UK is 6-5 guard Jim Master of Fort Wayne, Ind.
*UK basketball signees Brett Bearup and Jim Master were named to Basketball Weekly's high school All-American team. Bearup was named to the five-man first team, Master was a third-team selection. Both were also named on Parade magazine's second team, along with the McDonald's All-American Dream Team.
?Two Kentucky prep football stars, one headed for UK, were named to Joe Ter-ranova's list of "80 Great Ones." Jeff Smith of Washington County is headed for UK, while Chris Brown of Owensboro is going to Notre Dame.
?Spring football continued and much of the focus continues to surround the quarterback race. Coach Fran Curci has four candidatesRandy Jenkins, Larry McCrim-mon, Terry Henry and Rick Beuhnerand each has a chance at the top spot. With leading rushers Chris Jones and Shawn Donigan returning, along with several other qualified runners, the 'Cats are expected to have one of the SEC's strongest backfields.

?Senior Reggie Warford walked away with a sackful of awards at the annual Kentucky basketball banquet. He won the Frank Seale Award as the outstanding senior, the Senior Appreciation Award, the award for the fewest turnovers, the K-Men's Scholastics Award and the Kiwanis 110 Percent Award. Mike Phillips and Jack Givens, both sophomores, were co-winners of the MVP award. Givens captured the award as the best free throw shooter and Phillips won the trophy for being the best rebounder.
?UK basketball player Jack Givens was named to the Citizens Savings Athletic Foundation All-American Team, formerly known as the Helms Athletic Foundation team. He becomes the 27th Wildcat ever to earn All-American honors after finishing the season with a 20.1 scoring average.
?In the basketball recruiting wars, Kentucky landed three-time all-stater LaVon Williams of Denver, Colo., two-time all-stater Tim Stephens of McCreary County High School and All-American Jay Shidler of Lawrenceville, 111. Mississippi State was another SEC school considered to have a banner year as the Bulldogs laned 6-11 All-American Ricky Brown of Georgia, who was heavily recruited by Kentucky.
?Kentucky wrestlers Joe Carr and Kurt Mock gained All-American status as a result of their performances in the NCAA wrestling championships. Carr finished in third place in the 167-pound division for the second year in a row, while Mock grabbed the No. 6 position in the 134-pound weight class.
?Kentucky's Sonny Collins, the SEC's all-time leading rusher, was picked in the second round of the National Football League draft. The Atlanta Falcons picked Collins, who was the ninth running back selected. The only other Wildcat taken in the draft was offensive tackle Wally Pesuit, who was a fifth-round choice of the Dallas Cowboys.
?Before 10,000 fans at Commonwealth Stadium, UK unveiled a new wishbone attack in the annual Blue-White spring game. The Blue team won the game 27-7. Sophomore fullback Rod Stewart led all rushers with 84 yards. Quarterback Derrick Ramsey had 84 yards through the air and 47 yards on the ground. The other quarterback to see a great deal of action, Bill Tolston, was also impressive.

?UK basketball coach Adolph Rupp is scheduled to undergo minor foot surgery at the UK Medical Center. Rupp is to be hospitalized about two months.
?After a spring football scrimmage, UK football coach John Ray was pleased with the squad's performance.
"This is the best scrimmage we have had for this early since I have been here," Ray said. "We are very pleased with the spirit and the execution after only five days of practice."
?All-American Roger Hamperian of West Virginia and All-American Mike Emmanuel of Pennsylvania signed football grants with UK.
?UK's Mike Casey has signed a professional basketball contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, while Wildcat Larry Steele signed witht the Portland Trailblazers.
?George John "G.J." Smith of London became the first University of Kentucky basketball signee of the year. Smith was a two-time all-stater at Laurel County.

?Although the UK basketball team completed the year with a successful 20-6 record against an awesome schedule, it still marks the first time since 1942-43 that the 'Cats have lost as many as six games in a year. Only six of Adolph Rupp's 25 teams have lost that many. Vanderbilt was the only team to defeat Kentucky to be left out of postseason play.
?Kentucky center Bob Burrow has been named to the East squad for the annual East-West All-Star game at New York's Madison Square Garden.
?The Blues defeated the Whites in the annual spring football game before 2,500 fens at Stoll Field. Coach Charlie Bradshaw's Blue team never trailed after a 21-yard first-quarter field goal by Lou Michaels. Bill Farley quarterbacked the Blue team to the win. Delmar Hughes, the No. 1 quarterback prospect, guided the Whites. Paul Sloan led the ground game with 86 yards on five carries, including a 79-yard scamper. Bobby Cravens gained 82 yards. Don Netoski picked up 62 yards, Cliff Tribble had 51 and Bob Dougherty had 42.
?Four teams ranked in the Top Ten this season will compete in the fourth annual UKIT next year. Illinois, Southern Methodist and Dayton will join UK in the prestigious tourney.
Kentucky
