The whole thing was as hopeless, _ i
s It may be truly said, J
o As trying to get knowledge '  
Into a Freshmarfs head. ‘  
· So I’ve come to the conclusion  
That the whole thing is a fake,  _-
Or else the Muse don’t like me  
And has given me the shake.  
And I’ve written up this poem E V;  .
l » · Unaided by the Muse,  
And it wont be in the text books 6 
A That posterity will use. { 
When we go the way of Greece and Rome,  _
And though I may not know it,  
The school-boys all will bless my name is
Because I was no poet. ‘ `  
After this I’m done with poetry,  
And no matter who should ask,  
I never will begin again  
l On such a thankless task. * 
» And if the man who invented poetry  
Ever comes within my clutch-  
\Vell, I suppose I’d better stop right here  
Before I say too much.

before Christmas. We must have a large number of competitors.  
Just three or four would not justify the expense. Our prizes are
