Mascot Brings Life To Crowd
Have you ever wondered how expensive the clothes are that some people wear to University of Kentucky athletic events?
Gary Tanner's threads probably rate as the highest priced outfit, although he isn't a flashy dresser. Tanner is the guy that you've seen going wild at UK's football games. Dressed in a $500 costume, he is the furry Wildcat mascot.
"The university needs something to represent it," Tanner said. "People need to see the Wildcat so they can identify with it."
Without a doubt, Tanner is a friendly Wildcat. At the football games, he would wonder through the crowd, meeting thousands of fans.
"1 like to talk to spectators and walk into the stands," he said.
Being a Wildcat requires attending practice sessions also. It isn't a job in which Tanner just shows up for the football and basketball games.
"I practice with the cheerleaders on Tuesday and Thursday and on Fridays when there was home football games," he said. "During basketball season, we'll work around the games."
Wearing such an expensive outfit, it is also very humid inside. There isn't any holes to provide air for Tanner.
"Besides the fur, there is lining which makes an interior," he said. "I've lost up to 15 pounds at a game. The least I've lost was six pounds and that was at a night game.
"I wear a perforated nylon shirt and gym trunks underneath it."
Tanner describes the life of a Wildcat mascot.
"I'm a mystery type of person," he said. "People really don't know who I am.
"When I go to a fraternity party, people will look, then take another look. They'll want to shake my hand.
"The question that I am asked the most is, 'are you hot'? The second most asked question is, 'How do you see'? There are always girls who will say something like, 'you're so cuddly.''
The Wildcat costume rates as one of the best among colleges across the nation.
"It's an A-l outfit, I'm proud of it," Tanner said. "Penn State's Nittany Lion is the most pityful thing 'I've ever seen. The Florida Gator is just some big smiling thing, like a Walt Disney character."
A Bowling Green High graduate, Tanner was captain of the football and wrestling teams and ran track. He had cheerleading experience at Western Kentucky University before transferring to UK.
A business administration junior, Tanner made the cheerleading squad and decided that the role of the
