The University Faculty met in regular session Monday, April 14, 1958,
at 4:00 p.m. in the Assembly Room of Lafferty Hall. Vice President Chamberlain
presided. Members absent were A. D. Albright, N. B. Allison, C. Arnold
Anderson, J. W. Archdeacon, Roland W. Boughton, Jr.’. James S. Calvin, Morris
Cierley, Carl B. Cone, Frank G. Dickey‘, Charles F. Elton'. W. P. Garrigus,
Lyman V. Ginger, H. W. Hargreaves, Robert D. Haun. Wilbur A. Heinz', C. T.
Lesshafft. Abby L. Marlatt‘, L. L. Martin‘, L. E. Meece‘, Vernon Musselman,
Vincent Nelson. F. D, Peterson, David Ravencraft‘, Helen M. Reed, Doris M.
Seward, Lawrence Thompson', William R. Willard and Kenneth R. Wright.

The minutes of the special meeting of March 24, 1958 were read and approved.
Dean White presented a recommendation from the College of Arts and Sciences
that certain classes be authorized to be absent from the campus on the dates

indicated which was approved by the University Faculty.

May 8 and 9 (substitute for dates previously authorizedo-
no student will take more than one trip)

Air Science:

Botany 15: May 294 (field trip to Camp Robinson)
Geography April 28 and 29 (field observation tour of Western
133b Kentucky)

Dean Shaver presented a recommendation from the College of Engineering
that two students be permitted to be away from the campus May 1 through-4 for
the purpose of attending a Regional Student Conference of the American Society
of Civil Engineers which was approved by the Faculty.

Dean Matthews requested permission for five students in the Law College
to be absent from the campus April 18 and 19 for the purpose of attending
the Southern Law Review Conference at Columbia. South Carolina. Dean Matthews
stated that this request had not been circulated to the to the elected faculty
and asked a waiver of the circulation notice. The request for absence of the
five students and waiver of the circulation notice were approved by the
Faculty.

Dean Spivey presented recommendations from the Graduate Council for approval
of graduate courses previously approved for undergraduate credit; strictly
graduate courses; and changes in existing courses which were approved by the
University Faculty.

I. The Graduate Council recommends approval of graduate credit
for the following courses. previously approved by the appropriate
faculties for undergraduate credit:

Bank Management (3)

A study of principles and cases in commercial banking
practice. Bank management practices are studied within
the economics. monetary. fiscal and legal framework 0f
the American economy. Prerequisite: Economics 105:
Money and Banking, or consent of instructor.

lation to Greek Literature in English Translation: Homer to Xenophon.

Change Ancient Languages l22b from Classical Drama in English Trans-
lation to Greek Literature in English Translation: Plato to ProcOpium

Dr. Chamberlain then called on Dr. Weaver, Chairman of the Committee on anew
to proceed with the recommendations of the Rules Committee.

IV. THE MARKING SYSTEM was approved by the Faculty as presented through
Grade S,

The section, Grade E, was approved as read with the following addition."and
shall not be given unless the student withdraws officially.”a so that the sectflm
now reads

"Grade E, The grade W shall not be given if the student is failing at
time of withdrawal, and shall not be given unless the student withdraws
officially."

The section, Grades for Students Who Withdraw 2£.E£2 Dropped, was approved
as presented with the recommendation that it be taken back to the Rules Commitue
for reconsideration of the number of class days in which no grade will be reconhd
for a student who withdraws or is dropped.

Dr. Weaver requested that the section, Credit for Students Who Withdraw to
Enter Military Service, be amended to strike out the words "without examinatimfl n
the first sentence.

The sections, Reporting Final Grades and Changing 32 Grades were approvedby
the Faculty as presented.

The section, Grade Point Average, Was read by Dr. Weaver and the first smfieme
was approved with the amendment that the words "and S" be added so that it now
reads:

Grade point average is the ratio of the number of points gained to Hm
number of credits attempted, a W, I and 8 being ignored.

After discussion of the second sentence of this section Dean Matthews recommemhd
that the Committee on Rules reconsider the Grade l section which has alreadylwen
approved by the Faculty and Dean Shaver recommended that action on the second
sentence of the section, Grade Point Average, be deferred until the next meeting
of the Faculty and that the Faculty adjourn. Dean Shaver's recommendationswere
approved by the Faculty which adjourned at 5:05 p.m.
