Remember When
1978: UK vs. KANSAS
The "miracle worker" had struck again. Kentucky had squeaked out a 67-66 overtime win over the fifth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks in Rupp Arena.
The Wildcats had rallied from a 66-60 deficit with 30 seconds remaining and for those who still can't believe it, here is a recap.
With 22 seconds left, guard Dwight Anderson drove the lane for a basket that cut the Kansas lead to 66-62. On the ensuing inbounds pass, Jayhawk All-American Darnell Valentine was called for a foul. Anderson missed the free throw attempt, but following the wild scrap, got the ball back and was fouled again. Anderson connected on both charity tosses and Kansas led 66-64.
Rattled by the turnaround, Kansas called timeout, their last. Kentucky coach Joe B. Hall had told his team to steal the inbounds pass. All in one motion, Anderson tipped the pass, leaped and flipped the ball to Kyle Macy in the backcourt. Macy grabbed the ball, stopped and hit. Kentucky 66, Kansas 66.
Kansas called timeout, one they did not have and the Jayhawks were whistled for a technical foul. Macy toed the line and sank the free throw and the Wildcats had won.
Kentucky was led in scoring by Macy's 15 points followed by La-Von Williams' 10. Williams also tallied nine rebounds. Valentine paced the Kansas attack with 27 points.
