DR. H. HANLY FUNDERBURK, JR.
University President
Dr. H. Hanly Funderburk, Jr., is Auburn University's twelfth president. Formerly he served as chancellor of the Auburn University at Montgomery campus since 1969.
At AUM, the 48-year-old Funderburk developed a master plan and directed the ensuing growth and development of the campus. Under his direction, 12 buildings were constructed and academic programs for more than 4,700 students were developed on the urban campus.
Prior to his appointment at AUM, Funderburk served as assistant dean of the Auburn University Graduate School.
A graduate of Auburn, Dr. Funderburk took his bachelor's degree in agricultural science and the master's degree in botany. He received his Ph.D. in plant physiology from Louisiana State University.
A native of Carrollton, Ala., Dr. Funderburk served as a professor of botany and plant physiology at AU from 1961-68.
SONNY SMITH
Head Coach
Sonny Smith is in his third season as head coach at Auburn, continuing a rebuilding program at the "Lovliest Village." The Tigers were 13-16 his first year, then slipped to 10-18 last season.
Smith put together a 126-87 record in 11 years coaching in the hotbeds of prep basketball in North Carolina, Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky. He broke into college coaching as an assistant at William & Mary in 1969 before moving on to assist under Gary Colson at Pep-perdine. Don DeVoe, then head man at Virginia Tech, brought Smith to VPI as an assistant in 1971. In 1976, Smith became head coach at East Tennessee State near his hometown of Roan Mountain, Tn. He was OVC Coach of the Year in 1978.
The Tennessee native spent two years at Holmes Junior College in Goodman, Miss., before attending Milligan College in Johnson City, Tn. where he was an All-Conference basketball player for two seasons. He graduated in 1958.
