a darker purple dorsal extension on the middle of the second and   l
third thoracic somites, narrowing behind and reaching the anterior  ,

A the second and third thoracic somites reaches backward on each  if
side along the ventral" side of the body to the first fleshy legs.  
A First abdominal somite with a large forward—projecting dorsal prom-  
inence,with two small tubercles each surmounted by ahair atits apex. { 
A smaller prominence is present on the eighth abdominal somite,  
while less conspicuous ones occur on intervening divisions of the  ‘
body. Behind the large anterior prominence the middle of the si
back is finely marbled with pale yellow, giving the region a rosy y
hue. Fourth abdominal somite with a median dorsal black dot ;  
· fifth, with a black spot of some size. Behind the latter is a whitish Vi`
V-shaped mark, the opening posterior. A noticeable marking is three 4‘`.

The moth is difficult to rearifor some reason, the larvae dying _..‘
after preparing to pupate. A slight cocoon is constructed pre- *·
paratory to this change under leaves on the ground. ei
The adult moth has a wing expanse of 1.20 inches, the wings  
of the front pair decidedly angulate at the apex, elsewhere simple  
and rounded. Color, gray in general, with some obscure reddish ..
and black markings, and a clean~cut white dash just within the .
margin, a short distance anterior to the hind angle. Hind wings
pale centrally, extensively dusky along anterior and posterior
margins. `
The insect is more often seen upon plum in Kentucky than up-  
on apple. It attacks choke-cherry, dogwood, rose, alder, and other
