PREFACE.

?

THE CHRISTIAN HYMNAL, Revised, contains 748 hymns,
447 tunes, and several pages of chants.
‘ This edition contains the hymns only, omitting the tunes,
for the convenience of those persons who do not read music.

The hymns-in-both editions are in the same order, with
numbers to correspond.
‘ The Revised Hymnal was undertaken in response to a
general desire for such a work, as indicated in the action
of the General Christian Missionary Convention, held in
Louisville, Ky., October, 1880.

The well-known brethren named on the title-page se—
lected and arranged the hymns, and they. are published in
this separate form in compliance with the trust committed

to us.

4 PREFACE.

We commend this work to our brethren in the closing
words of the Revisers’ Preface, printed in the music edition:

“The importance of general uniformity in our hymns and
music, for the maintenance of spiritual unity, can not well
be disregarded. We have steadily kept in View congre-
gational singing; therefore, we earnestly entreat all the
Churches to supply their pews bountifully with the new
Hymnal, that all the people may sing.

“Praying God that this book may be avaluable instrument
in perfecting His praise, in quickening true worship among
His people, and that its sweep of sentiment and song may
assist in turning many sinners to the Lord Jesus, we send

it forth upon this holy mission.”

THE CHRISTIAN HYMNAL.

PART I.

1 I" M' ISAAC \VA'I‘TS-
1 BEFORE J ehovah’s awful throne,

Ye nations, bow with sacred joy;
Know that the Lord is God alone;

He can create, and He destroy.

2 His sov’rcign pow’r, without our aid,
Made us of clay, and formed us men ;

And when like \vand’ring sheep we strayed,
He brought us to His fold agaln.

3 \Ve are His people, we His care——
Our souls, and all our mortal frame;

What lasting honors shall we rear,
Almighty Maker to Thy name?

4 \Ve’ll crowd Thy gates with thankful songs,
High as the heav’ns our voices raise;
And earth, with her ten thousand tongues,
Shall fill Thy courts with sounding praise.

5 Wide as the world is Thy command!
Vast as eternity Thy love!

Firm as a rock Thy truth shall stand;
When rolling years shall c )asc to move!

2 L' 31' TATE AND BRADY.

1 \Vrrn glory clad, with strength arrayed,
The Lord, that o’er all nature reigns,

The world’s foundation strongly laid,
And the vast fabric still sustains.

2 110w sure established is Thy throne,
Which shall no change or period see!

For Thou, () Lord, and Thou alone,
Art God from all eternity.

3 The floods, O Lord, lift up their voice,
And toss the troubled waves on high;

But God above can still their noise,
And make the angry sea comply.

3 L‘ M' ISAAC \VATTS.

1 FROM all that dwell below the skies,
Let the Creator’s praise arise ;

Let the Redeemer’s name be sung
Through every land, by every tongue.
2 Eternal are Thy mercies, Lord;
Eternal truth attends Thy word:

Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore,
Till suns shall rise and set no more.

4: L' M‘ ISAAC W'ATTS.
1 JEIIOVAH reigns; His throne is high;
His robes are light and majesty;

His glory shines with beams so bright,
N0 mortal can sustain the sight.

2 His terrors keep the world in awe;
His justice guards His holy law;

His love reveals a smiling face;

His truth and promise seal the grace.

3 Thro’all Hisworks His wisdom shines,
And baffles Satan’s deep designs;

His pow’r is sov’reign to fulfill

The noblest. counsels of His will.

4 And will this glorious Lord descend
To be my Father and my Friend?
Then let my songs with angels’ join:
lleav’n is secure, if God be mine.

5 I L.1\/I. HARRIET AUBER.

1 ERE mountains reared their forms sublime,
()r heav’n and earth in order stood;
Before the birth of ancient time,
From everlasting, Thou art God.
2 A thousand ages, in their flight,
With Thee are as a fleeting day;
Past, present, future, to Thy sight
At once their various scenes display.
3.But our brief life’s a shadowy dream—
A passing thought, that soorx is o’er—
That fades with morning’s earliest beam,
And fills the musing mind no more.
4 To us, 0 Lord, the wisdom give
Each passing moment so to spend,
That we at length with Thee may live,
W'here life and bliss shall never end.

6 L' 31' JAMES MONTGOMERY.
1 SERVANTS of God! in joyful lays,
Sing ye the Lord Jehovah’s praise;
Ilis glorious name let all adore,
From age to age, for evermore.

2 1Vho is like God? so great, so high,
He bows Himself to View the sky;
And yet, with condescending grace,
Looks down upon the human race.

3 He hears the uneomplaining moan
Of those who sit and weep alone;

He lifts the mourner from the dust;
In Ilim the poor may safely trust.

4 0 then, aloud, in joyful lays,
Sing to the Lord Jehovah’s praise;
His saving name let all adore,
From age to age, for evermore.

’7 11- 34- ISAAC \VA’I‘TS.

1 THE heav’ns declare Thy glory, Lord,
In every star Thy wisdom shines;
But when our eyes behold Thy word,
We read Thy name in fairer lines. '

2 The rolling sun, the changing light,
‘ And nights and days, Thy pow’r confess;
But the blest volume Thou hast writ,
Reveals Thy justice and Thy g “ace.
3 Sun, moon, and stars, convey Thy praise
tound the whole earth, and never stand;
So when Thy truth began its race,
It touched and glanced on every land.
4 Nor shall Thy spreading gospel rest
Till thro’ the world Thy truth has run;
Till Christ has all the nations blest
That see the light or feel the sun.
5 Great Sun of Righteousness! arise;
Bless the dark world with heav’nlylight;
Thy gospel makes the simple wise;
Thy laws are pure,Thy judgments right.
(3 Thy noblest wonders here we View
In souls renew’d and sins forgiv’n;
Lord! cleanse my sins, my soul renew,
And make Thy word my guide to heav’n.

8 L. M.
1 Hi: dies, the friend of sinners dies!
Lo! Salem’s daughters weep around!
A solemn darkness veils the skies,
A sudden trembling shakes the ground.
2 Ilere’s love and grief beyond degree!
The Lord of Glory dies for men!
But, 10! what sudden joys we see—
Jesus the d aid revives again!
3 The rising Lord forsakes the tomb!
(The tomb in vain forbids His rise!)
Cherubic legions guard Ilim home,
And shout Ilim welcome to the skies!
Break off your tears, _ve saints, and tell
How high our great Deliv’rer reigns;
Sing how He .spoiled the hosts of hell,
And led the monster Death in chains.
5 Say, “Live forever, wondrous King!
Born to redeem, and strong to save!”
Then ask the monster, “ \Vhere’s thy sting?
And where thy viet’ry, boasting grave?"

THE CHRISTIAN HYMNAL.

6 My soul anticipates the day—-

\Vould stretch her wings and soar away,
To aid the song, the palm to bear,
And praise my great Redeemer there.

32 - L. P. M.

1 I’LL praise my Maker while I’ve breath,

And when my voice is lost in death
Praise shall employ my nobler pow’rs;

My days of praise shall ne’er be past,

thile life, and thought, and being last,
And immortality endures.

ISAAC WATTS.

2 Happy the man whose hopes rely

On Is 'ael’s God: He made the sky,
And earth, and seas, with all their train.

His truth forever stands secure;

He saves th’ oppressed, IIe feeds the poor,
And none shall find His promise vain.

3 The Lord pours eyesight on the blind;
The Lord supports the fainting mind;
He sends the lab’ring conscience peace;
He helps the stranger in distress,
The widow and the father-less,
And grants the pris’ner sweet release.

33 L. P. M.

1 I LOVE the volume of Thy word;
\Vhat light and joy its truths afford
To souls benighted and distressed l
Thy precepts guide my doubtful way,
Thy fear forbids my feet to stray,
Thy promise leads my heart to rest.

ISAAC WATTS.

2 Thy threat’nings wake my slumb’ring eyes,
And warn me where my danger lies;

But ’tis Thy blessed gospel, Lord,
That makes my guilty conscience clean,
Converts my soul, subdues my sin,

And gives a free, but large, reward.
3 \Vho knows the errors of his thoughts?
My God, forgive my secret faults,

And from presumptuous sins restrain;

12

Accept my poor attempts of praise,
That 1 have read Thy book of grace,
And book of nature, not in vain.

34 L' 34' 61‘ JOSEPH ADDISON.

1 THE Lord my pasture shall prepare,
And feed me with a shepherd’s care;
His presence shall my wants supply,
And guard me with a watchful eye;
My noonday walks He shall attend,
And all my midnight hours defend.

2 When in the sultry glebe I faint,
Or on the thirsty mountains pant,

To fertile vales and dewy meads,

My weary, wand’ring steps He leads,
Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow, .
Amid the verdant landscape flow.

3 Though in the paths of death I tread,
With gloomy horrors overspraul,

My steadfast heart shall fear no ill,
For Thou, O Lord! art with me still;
Thy friendly crook shall give me aid,
And guide me through the dismal shade.
