Essayist and poet. London. A.L.S. to Elkin Mathews. lO Jan.1897. lp. (half of an octave Sheet.) He inquires about his second book of poems, which hEVe been ready for a long tbne. If the poems can be published in the spring, his promised book of essays will be ready by the fall. But if that program cannot be followed, he mush make other arrangements. Mathews evidently met the conditions, for Johnson‘s second book of poems, Ireland, wifih Other Foams, appeared in 1897. Mathews had publisled the previous volmne in 1895. Johnson is now perhaps best remembered as the man who introduced Lord Alfred Douglas to Oscar Wilde. 7,Gray's Inn Squara: Gray‘s Inn. Jan.lO,1897. My dear Mathews, What about my second book of poems ? They have been ready for the press a long time, and I am Very anxious to hare them out, as soon as possible: so, to judge by endless paragraphs, are some of my readers and critics. I have been, and am, so busy, that I can fix no date, by which my essays will be ready: but, if you would publish the poems in the Spring, I could promise the Essays in the autumn. But if you do not see your way tothat, I must make arrangements elsewhere: for the poems must come first, and I am most anxious about their prompt publication. Please let me have a line: Very sincerely yours Lionel Johnson.
