Side borders ornamented with a gilt tooled floral design, consist-
ing of vines, and Olllays of red morocco, doublures of red levant
morocco, with an interlaced gilt tooled floral design, end—papers
of red silk moiré, gilt top, by WOOD; minute repair in the inner
blank portion of a number of the margins. In a full red levant
morocco solander case.

London: Printed for Lee and Hurst, 1798

THE EXCESSIVELY RARE FIRST EDITION WITH THE LONDON IMPRINT, issued
simultaneously with the edition bearing the imprint “Birmingham, Printed
by Thomas Pearson, I798”. Probably not more than three or four copies of
the latter edition are known. Wise, in his Ashley Catalogue, states that “pre-
cedence cannot be accorded to either the Birmingham or the London imprint,
both of which were probably placed on sale upon the appointed day”.

The present copy contains seven original blank leaves, three at the front of
the volume and four at the back, which is three more than Livingston records
in his bibliography. In the binding of this volume, two of the above leaves
have been backed with watered silk and placed at the front and the back of
the book.

Regardless of the slight repairs noted above, THIS Is A VERY DESIRABLE COPY
OF A WORK RARE IN ANY CONDITION.

*fi FIRST (“ SURPRIZE ”) EDITION. This and the two copies
described below should contain a title and a sheet of music, but as
these three copies and one in the British Museum are all imperfect in
exactly the same way, it is highly probable that some copies were so
issued. Andrew Lang states in his preface to the reprint (p. viii) that
only one copy with the title—page has been found.

THREE BOOKS

The provenence of these volumes is indicated by a printed label on the inside of the cover
of each: “ Relics of Charles Lamb. Purchased at Edward Moxon’s Sale by Francis Jackson,

Hackney.”

Edward Moxon, the publisher and close friend of Lamb, came into possession of Lamb’s

Jackson bought the volumes must have taken place soon after that date.
