Collection Overview

Biography / History
Thruston Ballard Morton was born in 1907 to a prominent Louisville family which descended from George Rogers Clark, William Clark, and Rogers Clark Ballard. In 1929 Thruston Morton graduated from Yale University, then worked in the family grain and milling business, Ballard and Ballard, later sold to Pillsbury Company. From 1941-1946, during the Second World War, Morton served as a lieutenant commander in the United States Naval Reserve. After the war, he ran for Congress as a Republican and won. He served in the House for six years. In 1952 he successfully managed the campaign of John Sherman Cooper for the Senate. In January of 1953, President Eisenhower appointed him Assistant Secretary of State for Congressional Relations, a post he held for three years. In 1956 Morton obtained a United States Senate seat. While a Senator, Morton was elected Chairman of the Republican National Committee, serving from 1959 to 1962. In 1946, Morton was Chair of the Republican National Convention. After retiring from the Senate Morton served on many boards including the Pillsbury Company, Liberty National Bank, Louisville, Churchill Downs, and the American Horse Council. He died in 1982, survived by his wife, Belle Clay Lyons, and two sons.
