FO R E W O R D
HE main frame of the "Royer Jr.” is of sturdy welded con-
Tstruction and supports the pulley bearings upon which are
mounted the top and bottom pulleys. The pulley bearings are
of ample size, fully enclosed, dust-proof, anti-friction type. Over
the two pulleys, at an angle of 45 degrees, runs the Royer combing
belt, an endless belt upon which are mounted heat-treated chrome
molybdenum sprigs or teeth spaced in staggered rows in a manner
to form pockets between the sprigs.
Supported over the belt is a wide and deep hopper for guid-
ing the material onto the belt; the lower end of the hopper having
a solid and movable retaining plate; the upper end a retarding
sweep.
The top pulley is driven from a totally enclosed motor by
means of a V-Bclt drive.

 OPERATION

In the operation of the "Royer Jr.” the soil, sand or material,
either shoveled or conveyed into the hopper by mechanical means, ‘I‘
falls upon the Royer combing belt which traveling in an upward dir~ {I
ection, combs or rakes the bottom surface of material in hopper I
into granular form. the grains then gravitating into the pockets be-
tween the sprigs.

The thorough mixing and blending of the material and separa—
tion of the undesirable material is due to the spacing of sprigs on
the belt, the speed at which they travel on a straight plane through
the hopper of The Royer, plus the natural law of gravity is explained
as follows:

As the steel sprigs enter the lower end of the hopper they come
in contact with and set up a combing action on the material, combing
it grain from grain, separated grains or particles then lodging in
the pockets between the sprigs. Due, however, to the speed of
travel, these pockets are not completely filled until they have
travelled the entire length of the hopper, and for this reason these
pockets collect portions of the various ingredients in the entire
hopper, effecting a complete blending and mixing. As these filled
pockets pass under the sweep at the upper end of hopp:r and pass
over the upper pulley, they are unloaded by centrifugal force, and
thrown Forward through the air for a thorough and final aeration.

The undesirable material such as pebbles, stones. roots, nails.
scrap, etc., due to the speed of travel and spacing of the steel sprigs
on The Royer belt, do not lodge in the pockets but gravitate to the ’V
lower end of hopper where they are discharged by merely tripping
the retaining plate when the belt is running free of material. $

 CARE OF BELT

While The Royer does not require any more care than an ordin-
‘ ary machine, still the belt is sometimes subject to abuse and for this
‘I‘ reason, the operator should be instructed that the life of the belt
Q’ depends upon the care same receives and in order to get the maxi-
. mum amount of service from the belt, it is necessary that he follows
the instructions given below. If these instructions are followed,
the life of the belt will be lengthened materially and maintenance
cost of machine will be very small, figured on the number of tons or

yards of material handled by the belt in a given time.

The belt at all times should be running true on pulleys, reference
being made to Plate A. The belt should be adjusted evenly between
the Flanges of top pulley by nuts No. 10 which are on both sides of
machine. The tightening or loosening of these nuts causes the belt
to float evenly between the flanges and prevents the wearing of these
flanges and edge of belt. He also should understand that it is not
necessary to have excessive stress on belt and same should be tight-
ened merely enough to prevent slippage on pulleys. In feeding
material into hopper of The Royer, care should be exercised to
avoid throwing heavy undesirable material into the machine un—
necessarily. He should further avoid allowing small undesirable
material to accumulate in hopper and ride sprigs of belt but should
frequently clear the hopper from treated material and discharge the
undesirable material by opening retaining plate at bottom.

A further important matter which should be impressed upon
the operator is that just before discontinuing the use of The Royer.
he should use a wire brush on the sprigs of belt for about one-half
minute. cleaning same of material that may cling to these sprigs.
He should also be careful to see that material does not accumulate
on inner surface of belt and cling to pulleys.

'y These instructions are very important and we feel sure that
' you will be perfectly satisfied with the service received from The
$ Royer. if the operator follows these instructions at all times.

 TO ADJUST SWEEP
To adjust sweep fingers No. 16 (referring to Plate A) loosen
nuts No. 19 so that sweep finger No. 16 can be adjusted up or down
between parts No. 18 and No. 17, as may be required. Retighten
nuts No. 19 when each finger No. 16 has been properly adjusted. 4}
Fingers No. 16 act independent of each other but all fingers ‘5
can be worked as a unit by throwing up handle No. 20 in direction
as shown by arrow. When resetting fingers No. 16, push handle
No. 20 down to stop.

TO ADJUST V-BELT
Referring to Plate A, remove drive guard No. 2 so as to see
that V-Belt is properly adjusted. Loosen 4 cap screws No. 21 that
hold motor No. 22 to base and push motor, in direction as shown
by arrow, until V-Belt No. 3 has the proper tension. When V-Belt K
is properly adjusted retighten cap screws No. 21 and install guard .

 CORRECT LUBRICATION

MOTOR—As this motor is equipped with wool yarn system of

lubrication, oiling is only needed at infrequent intervals. When
A; oiling add slowly, (so that the full amount may be absorbed by the
wool yarn) a good grade of light (SAE-IO) mineral engine oil which
‘5 will not thicken in cold weather.

PULLEY BEARINGSHAS the bearing units are ball bearing
equipped and leave our plant packed with a ball bearing grease,
attention is not needed for at least 6 months. It is then recom-
mended that the bearings be flushed out and thoroughly cleaned to
remove hardened and dirty grease, then repacked from 13 to 5"; full
of good grade of ball bearing grease.

It grease injecting fittings are installed in place of pipe plugs
lior the injection of grease, the greasing period should be about
every eight (8) weeks, preferably applied when the shaft is revolving.
This allows churning to take place as lubricant is applied, and gen-
erally no great an excess will work out if application is stopped
when the first grease shows outside of the housing. It should be
impressed on the person who does this greasing that he cleans these
fittings thoroughly of all dirt before attaching the gun for the in-
jection of grease.

TO RENEW BELT

To rcnew Belt (referring to Plate A) remove drive guard
No. 2, V-Belt No. 3 and supporting plate No. 5 from under belt.
On both sides of machine remove cap screws No. 6, bolts No. 9.
parts No. 13, No. 12, No. 10, and part No. 14. Lift hopper No. 15
from OH: supports. The pulleys and old belt are now ready to be
removed and new belt installed, Care should be taken to see that
the installed belt runs in direction as shown by arrow. which is

K painted on same.
" Reverse the above directions for installing removed parts and
V follow instructions under CARE OF BELT for lining up belt.
