Cooper was again elected to the Senate (over Thomas R. Underwood) in 1952 to fill an unexpired term. However, in 1954, his bid for re-election was halted by Alben Barkley. In 1955 he was appointed ambassador to India and Nepal. He became a candidate for the Senate once again in 1956. Beating Lawrence Wetherby in the general election, Cooper then served in Senate until his retirement in 1972. He was involved in many liberal causes, promoting civil rights, coal mine safety, and labor legislation. He also was an active opponent of the Vietnam War. These are the personal and political papers of U.S. Senator from Kentucky, John Sherman Cooper. Each of twelve series contains personal, political, and general papers within one or more subject files. Cooper, a Republican, was first elected to the Senate in a special election held in 1946 to fill an unexpired term. In 1948 his bid for re-election was thwarted by Democrat Virgil Chapman. The next year he was appointed a delegate to the United Nations. He also served as advisor to Dean Acheson on NATO matters. Cooper was again elected to the Senate in 1952 to fill another unexpired term. In 1954, however, he was defeated for re-election again by Alben W. Barkley. The series, a partial record of that time, consists of three boxes on the Judiciary, District of Columbia, and Public Works Committees. Cooper's assignments in 1953-1954 were Armed Services, Interstate and Foreign Commerce, and Post Office and Civil Service Committees. 1947-1948 i Agricultural Act, Hearings 1 1 Judiciary Committee, Displaced Persons in Europe 1 2 Petroleum 1 3 Veterans Administration 1 4 Voting Record, First Session 1 5 Voting Record, Second Session 1 6 1953-1954 ii Airports, Kentucky 1 7 Airports, Standiford Field 1 8 Aman Airlines, Louisville 1 9 Ashland Floodwall, Dedication Speech 1 10 Atomic Reactor Plant 1 11 Avon Signal Depot 1 12 Barkley, Alben W. 1 13 Beattyville Flood Control Project 1 14 Booneville Power Dam 2 1 Bricker Amendment 2 2 Buckhorn School 2 3 Buckhorn Watershed 2 4 Burnside Project 2 5 Camp Breckinridge 2 6 Celina Dam 2 7 Centre College 2 8 Commerce Department 2 9 Corbin Flood Control Project 2 10 Corbin Plant Site 2 11 Covington Floodwall Project 2 12 Cumberland River Basin 2 13 Cumberland River Dam 2 14 Directory, Kentucky Banks 2 15 Falmouth Reservoir 2 16 Flood Control, General Information 2 17 Form Letters 3 1 Fort Knox Expansion 3 2 Fort Knox Postmaster 3 3 Fort Thomas, Veterans Hospital 3 4 Foster and Bradford, Post Offices 3 5 Frenchburg, Postmaster 3 6 Fritz, Postmaster 3 7 Frymire, Post Office 3 8 Fullerton, Post Office 3 9 Fulton, Post Office 3 10 Hill-Burton Act 3 11 Horse Cave Chemicals 3 12 Jessamine Creek Dam 3 13 Jackson Cutoff Project 3 14 Korean Prisoners of War 3 15 Kuttawa Dam 3 16 Legislative Correspondence 3 17 Louisville Flood Control Project 3 18 Maysville Flood Wall Project 3 19 Outwood Veterans Hospital 3a 1 Maps of United States, Order File 3a 2 Republican Officials, Kentucky 3a 3 Somerset Housing Project, Robo Letter 3a 4 Tennessee Valley Authority 3a 5 Voting Record, First Session 3a 6 Voting Record, Second Session 3a 7 Senatorial II 1956-1972 Scope and Contents note The Senatorial Series II, the largest series in the Cooper Collection, consists of five major files: Subject, Legislative, William Miller, Office Copy, Government Publications. The individual files are arranged either alphabetically or chronologically dependent upon the organization used by Cooper's Senate staff. Foreign affairs material is located primarily in the Lesiglative and the William Miller files. Cooper's interest in domestic issues is reflected by the Subject File, particularly in folders designated Baily Guard, who was a legislative aide to the Senator. During the period of 1956-1972, Cooper served on the Public Works, Rules and Administration, Agriculture, and Foreign Relations Committees. In 1964 he was appointed to the Select Committee on Standards and Conduct which was established by a resolution which Cooper sponsored.
