V 6 Bulletin N0. 147.
i to elevate the nozzle, it is possible to spray trees eight or
i more feet in height with such an outfit. Grapevines can be _ ,
" j sprayed very well with a bucket pump, provided there are
~ not many of them. ` , .
. If there are many vines to spray, and a good stout man
_ , to do the work, a knapsack sprayer may be best. It is a
g very convenient outfit for spraying grapevines and may _be ‘ ~
i used to advantage in spraying tobacco, potatoes, and other
· A low-growing plants, which from the manner of their cultiva-
tion it is not practicable to go among with a team and wagon.
i For extensive spraying, it is well to secure a strong
pump attached to a barrel, or tank, that can be hauled about i
_ in a cart, or wagon. Hand pumps so attached are used for
1 small orchards and other plants grown in a moderate way, . ·
‘ and power pumps are demanded for extensive spraying and A
for that required by tall trees. ~
l About most farms a useful sprayer is a barrel pump .
l to be operated by hand. It serves for the orchard, for
i potatoes, and can be so managed as to answer for grapes ‘
and single shrubs, or trees, about the lawn. It can, in short, °`
be made to do about all the work of the bucket and knap-
sack pumps, and in addition is very satisfactory for the or- i
chard and Held of moderate extent.
A man engaged in fruit growing, or potato growing, as
l a business, ought nowadays to have ‘a power sprayer of some 4
sort, either operated by the wheel of the vehicle carrying
the outfit, as in the compressed—air sprayers, or by a gaso- '
line motor. The cost of such outfits will keep them out of
_ the hands of all but large farmers, truckers, and the fruit 5
, growing specialist. Y
A general purpose spray pump should be made of brass
so that it will not be corroded by the copper sulphate used in
Bordeaux mixture. If one wishes to spray only arsenate of ‘
lead, Paris green or lime-sulphur preparations, ~a pump of
iron may be employed.
. Nozzles, too, should be made of brass, and ought to be
constructed so that they can be quickly cleared of solid par-
ticles that may lodge in the outlet. *
