A 1 INSECTICIDES.
The materials used in spraying should always be of good l
quality. A Paris green must, to give the results assumed
by the directions given below, contain the equivalent of about
fifty per cent. of arsenious oxid. A good arsenate of lead
paste should contain not less than twelve and a half per
· cent. of arsenious oxid, and should not contain more than
fifty per cent. of water. Pyrethrum should not be very old, ~
and cannot be expected to be very effective if it has been
kept in an open package. Soaps contain very various
amounts of effective ingredients. A good caustic potash
whale—oil soap is as likely as any to be constant in composi-
tion and thus to give the same results each time when made
up by a given formula.
Failure to get satisfactory results is probably in some
cases the result of using poor or adulterated materials, though
A my experience in Kentucky indicates that fraud has been less
frequently practised in this State than it has in some others.
