Attorney and judge. Buckner was born in Illinois, though his parents were Kentuckians. He was educated at the Kentucky Military Institute and read law in the office of his father. He began the practice of law in Winchester, Ky. in 1857. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war, Buckner held various judicial positions, among them judgeship of the Tenth Judicial District in Kentucky.
These papers are comprised of personal and business correspondence, legal documents and other business records, reflecting Buckner's activity as an attorney and judge in Central Kentucky. Included in the papers are personal correspondence; several Civil War letters; business correspondence; legal documents; account books and ledgers; lawyers' office dockets; checks; and diary of R. D. Martin (1918). These materials are of interest for the details they provide of the life and legal practice of a 19th century attorney and judge in central Kentucky.
