According to the Allegations and Inquiries Case Summary, it was alleged that on March 30, 1988, while recruiting prospective student-athlete Chris Mills (Los Angeles, California), men's assistant basketball coach Dwane Casey sent a package via Emery Worldwide Overnight Service that contained a videotape and 20 $50 bills to Claud Mills, the prospect's father at their home. It further alleges that a receipt for delivery of the package was signed by the prospect. This allegation can be divided into five questions which the case set out to answer: (1) did Casey place money in the overnight package; (2) was money in the package when it left the university; (3) did Emery Overnight representatives find money in the package; (4) did Emery place the money back in the package and deliver it, and (5) did Claud Mills receive the money? At the conclusion of the 1988-1989 basketball season, the University determined that new leadership was needed to conduct the basketball program. Consequently, Head Coach Eddie Sutton submitted his resignation to President David Roselle on March 19, and it was accepted effective April 2. Subsequently, assistant coaches Dwane Casey, James Dickey, and Jimmy Dykes submitted their resignations to the Athletics Director, and they were accepted. The Response of the President of the University of Kentucky to the Official Inquiries from the National Collegiate Athletic Association contains documents of allegations and inquiries regarding the case.
