 PREFACE
The second volume of The Historical Records of North Carolina
carries the lists of county records through sixty-three of the
state’s one hundred existing counties. It is expected that the third
volume will cover the other thirty-seven counties. For detailed
descriptions of the various types and series of county records and
for other explanatory material, reference should be made to
the General Introduction to the Series and the Introduction to
the County Records, Volume I, pages 1-129. These pages are
available as a separate reprint.
The copy for this volume has been prepared by the Historical
Records Survey of the Works Progress Administration. Dr. Luther
, H. Evans is National Director of the Survey, and since July 1,
1937, Mr. Dan Lacy has been State Director for North Carolina.

 THE COUNTY RECORDS
OF
NORTH CAROLINA

 
 CRAVEN COUNTY
Formed, 1712, as a precinct of Bath County. Named for William,
Lord Craven, one of the Lords Proprietors. In mid-coastal section
of state; area: 660 square miles. Population; 1850—14,709;
1900-24,160; 1930——30,665, of whom 15,855 were white and
14,809 Negro. Chief crops: corn, tobacco, and hay. Chief indus-
trial product: lumber. Chief city, New Bern, port and trade cen-
ter; population, 1930: 11,981.
New Bern, county seat. No record of first courthouse.
Present courthouse two-story building with basement, built in
1883. Exterior dimensions: 154’ x 54’ x 45'. Constructed of brick
and tile. Tin roof. Structure semi-fireproof. On first floor: offices
of Register, Clerk, Sheriff, Auditor, and Tax Collector. On second
fioor: courtroom and offices of Superintendent of Schools and
Superintendent of Health. In basement: storage room.
All current and most non-current records of Register are in
fireproof vault adjacent to office. Majority of Clerk’s records are
in large outer office; others, except a few non-current records, are
in vault adjacent to office. Storage conditions and facilities for
users good in both offices. Records of other county officers well
cared for in respective oiiices, with adequate facilities for users.
Some non-current records of Register, Clerk, and Auditor, in-
cluding many historically valuable papers from Clerk’s office, in
basement and attic of courthouse, kept under very poor storage
conditions.
No known loss of records through fire or otherwise.
County has no Treasurer; Branch Bank and Trust Company
acts as depository. Auditor acts as Accountant and has custody of
records of Tax Supervisor and Tax Collector, who work under him.
Sheriff and Coroner keep no records.
