ITX presenting to the members of this Association the Fifth and probably the last edition of its Constitution, By-Laws, etc., that will ever be compiled, it is the wish of the author, without any attempt to bring himself into prominence, or to assume a virtue he does not own, that whatever of good or ill there may be in the work, all should know that he has done the best he could.

Almost entirely unaided, he has gathered up the faces and scattered records of more than a hundred of our precious dead, and the same hand has compiled and completed the work in all its detail.

It is hoped that those who may be unkind enough to criticise adversely its imperfections, will remember the many neglected opportunities offered them to correct these errors, and that all

will accept the effort as a crude and simple tablet to the memory of the living and the dead Confederate soldiers whose names are here recorded and alas ! are "too soon forgotten when they are gone."

The blessings and guidance of a merciful Father has directed and controlled the efforts that have been used to bind in one common bond the frosted veterans of another day and year, who followed the flag of a withered hope and a dead cause, until all was laid away in the grave with the brave in misfortune who fell. The Officers of the various Counties where Camps are established have been, as a rule, untiring in their efforts to gather in the fold all those who were eligible to membership, and for their zeal, the thanks of the Association are due them and they are deserving pf flje'- lughfest 'praise. The good

people have been kind and generous in their offerings to the needy of our ranks. Conspicuous and most prominent stands out the name of Colonel H. B. Morehead, of Cincinnati, Ohio, the President of the Cincinnati Commercial Gazette Company. While he has protested against any publicity of his benefactions, the Association feels so deeply grateful to him, that a plain duty compels it to express here the sense of obligation resting upon every Confederate soldier for his kindness and generosity to them and all will bless and honor his name.

A glance at the list of those of our members who have died since the organization of the Association must forcibly remind us all that our lives are held only by the frailest tenure ; that time has not been idle in our ranks, and all should be greatly impressed with the importance of preserving and perpetuating their records of those years of warfare, hallowed and made glorious by tbe blood and treasure of our own Sunnyland. To the living Confederate Soldiers we come, beseeching them in the name of the dead Cause for which they fought, in 6lte; rr^m' : ette County
