Dear sir
Your letter came duly to hand enclosing a list of
many I had paid monies to but no particular whatever;
now I cannot make out anything by that as you do not state
what the money was paid for.
You say my account is not satisfactory and you want to
know what every cent has been spent for. Well when I get
back to Frankford I will give you more particulars but I
think you should know what"bills not rendered" means without
asking me., as you will find that I sent from Pittsburgh
before we started that I had given fifty dollars for trade
of boat and that I had to give 75 for pilot and there is no
bill rendered for that — but I shall not be able to tell
every cent I spent for the company for I shall perhaps be
$ 40 or 5D that I have spent for which I have no account.
But there is another thing while at Pittsburgh. I lent the
company $5.UO which I find by Mr. Oram’s letter to me as not
been paid back. Now I let the company have it at a time when
we would have tdwait till you could of sent it from Frankford
as I could not get it on the company in no way as Mr. Patrick
the broker would not listen to it and we had tried at one
or two other places and fully expected that the company would
put it to my credit at once. But not so, I am sorry to see it.
I will say no more; only I hope it will be paid at once.
Yours
Thos. Hargraves

 Frankford, Pennsylvania, Sept. l3, 1865
Mr. Harvey Quicksall, Pres.
Dear Sir
I have received your letter dated Aug. 26th protesting
against the action of the Board and of two gentlemen of your
party, in reference to a certain lease. I have also received
the protest of signed by all the members of your party except
the two gentlemen concerned. I have also received a package
of description papers and maps sent to you by Mr. Kelsey and by
you sent forward without examination.
At a meeting last night of the Board I presented the above
mentioned package of descriptive papers and maps, and your letter
accompanying them, and also Mr. KeEey's letter, all of which
were, on motion, placed in the hands of C.C. Bram.
I also presented your letter dated Aug. 26th, and also the
protest above referred to. The meeting last night is the first
organized meeting the Board has had since the meeting at which
the motion to accept the lease in question was passed. Your letter was
read to a few of the Directors at an informal meeting on last night
a week. This developed the fact that the intention of Mr. Puth,
the move to accept, was, not that the action of the Board should be
final, but that if ygg should approve. It seems that the mistake
occurred in this way. The matter had been discussed so these
members tell me previous torthe orgahization of the meeting and
they had come to the conclusion to accept the lease with the
understanding that it should meet your approval before consumation.
I was not present when this conversation was had, and was not
therefore aware of their intention. After the organization, the
lease was read and Mr. Puth moved that it be accepted. He neglected
to add the proviso that"should Mr. Quicksall approve of it". I
being ignorant of this and the other members' intention, of
course wrote down the motion as made. At the meeting last night
before the adoption of the minutes of the previous meeting they
were made to conform to the intention of the Directors. Thus the
minutes now read — " Un motion said lease is accepted provided
Mr. Harvey Guicksall, Pres., shall approve of it."
I will now say a few words in regard to the action of the two
gentlemen of your party who are concerned in tm lease. You, and
perhaps the other members of your party who are not concerned
in the lease have the impression, judging from your letter and from
the protests, that Mr. Castor and Marshall made a direct application
to the Board to accept their lease. This is not the fact. I am
sorry if my letter gave you that impression. Mr. Thos. Castor
received one or two letters from his son, describing the lease
and asking his father's opinion of it. In one of these letters

dccurs this sentence, " IF the Cpmpany wants the lease they can
have it, it they take it at a risk the same as we did." I
haven't the letter td cepy tram but I think I have given the
sentence cmrrectly. N0 eftprt has been made sc Far as I am aware
either directly Of indirectly by either ef the twc gentlemen
named tp get the Beard te accept their lease.
Heping that what I have here written may put this matter in
its prcper pesitidn, I cldse.
Yeurs

. Louisa, Lawrence County, Kentucky, Sept. 23, 1865
Mr. Daniel Hallowell, Sec.
Dear Sir
I have received your letter of Sept. l3th announcing the
receipt of a letter dated the 26th August. also the pretest
and also the package and maps from Kelsey. The letter acted
upon and placed in the hands of Mr. C.C. Dram. Your explanation
in reference to the acceptance of the lease is very clear. Of
course this changes the whole feature of the affair. Glad you
have been informed that the resolution contained a proviso
referring it to this part of our company for final decision.
All of the trouble consequence to the misunderstanding would
have thus been avoided. You state that at a subsequent meeting
the revised minutes were made to conform to the resolution of
the Directors and that the minutes now read "In motion said
lease is accepted provided Harvey Quicksall should approve of
it." Had the resolution come to us as it now stands there should
have been no demonstration of feebng here. I should have passed
upon it as I do now availing myself of the proviso contained in
the resolution. I disapprove of the acceptance of such leases
by the Board of Directors. You say judging by my letter and our
protest that we have the impression that Mr. Castor and Marshall
made a direct application to the Board to accept their lease.
We were under that apprehension and from your letter. As you say,
you are sorry if "my letter" gave you the impression. It did
indeed do it.But you not being at the meeting when the lease was
first read & discussed could give me no other impression than
you did; of course you are entirely excusable. Your statement
and explanation of the whole is entirely satisfactory.
Now this you will submit to the Board that the See well
