In the Fall of 93 the State Colle e Athletic Association com osed of
vt , g P
what had previously been three departments, foot-ball, basket-ball and ,
Ny track, were combined into one.
{lt . Pursuant to an order of the Board of Trustees a Faculty Committee l
Vit on A·thletics was appointed by the President consisting of Professor
Nelson (chairman) and Professors Blanton and Miller. For several ·
years thereafter however the Athletic Committee had very little power-
= all matters during this period coming directly to the Faculty; and it was
ih with records of this kind that the minutes of the Facult are chiefl_ filled.
__, Y Y
yy The first controversy in the Faculty was over the playing of Academic
fj.; students. The principal of the Academy was determined that his
,·Q'j. students should not play on teams in match games, which in that day,
wt most of the matriculation in the institution being below the grade of
Freshman, would have put State College out of the running with the
Y} other colleges, who had no such resctrictions and were also pretty prone to
nit offer all kinds of inducements to get persons to play on their teams.
"; In the first trial of strength in the Faculty, over whether students
. below the grade of Freshman should be permitted to contest as members
of the teams, the anti-athletic element was out voted by the pro-athletic
J ,; element 12 to 4. However, this was a barren victory, for at the next
meeting of the Board of Trustees (or Executive Committee) the Presi-
V fl dent had on order passed nullifying in effect the action of the Faculty .
 · (of course the Board never knew how matters stood in the Faculty, or
( V what their action had been).
F ’ It was also ordered by the Board that permission to play away from
‘ QQ home must be granted by the whole Faculty on application in each case.
