THE ROYAL STUD

of the starting-gate. The rise and the development of
the Jockey Club from 1750 to the present time is not
the least important feature of that period. That wealthy
and exclusive organisation began when Royalty seemed
temporarily to have neglected the Turf altogether. But
it has never been without a member of the Royal family
upon its lists; and if in the Eclipse hoof it preserves the
memory of William iv.'s interest, in the painting of
Diamond Jubilee it will possess a record not merely of
the interest of our present Sovereign, but of a racing
career which very few members of the present club have
equalled.
