[Identification of item], Charles Richard Staples papers, 1912-1947, 1VF50W42, 1M53M12, 1M84M23t, AAN9060LM, Special Collections, University of Kentucky. Genealogist, Historian. Charles Richard Staples was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1875. After attending Transylvania University in his hometown, he worked for the Lexington Electric Light Company, the United States Post Office in Lexington, and then, from 1918 to 1944, for the Southern Railway, also located in Lexington. During this period and continuing into his retirement, he spent a great deal of time researching the early history of Kentucky and the genealogy of early Kentucky families. His 1939 book, THE HISTORY OF PIONEER LEXINGTON 1779-1806 along with numerous published articles in various journals, but especially in the REGISTER OF THE KENTUCKY HISTORICAL SOCIETY helped establish him as well-informed on early Kentucky history. The papers contain correspondence, and genealogical materials relating to the research of Charles R. Staples or to the research he performed for others. One accession (1M53M12) is primarily comprised of letters of inquiry from numerous persons trying to trace their ancestry, and copies of Staple's replies to them. Correspondence between Staples and officials of both the Filson Club in Louisville and the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort, Ky. are present as well. Most of the information is on Kentucky families, including the Breckinridge, January, Hart, Clay, and Brockenbrough family, although material on many other families is available as well. The papers also contain numerous typed abstracts from the Fayette County, Ky. records, as well as a list of pioneer stations in frontier Kentucky, information on John Bradford, the founder of the KENTUCKY GAZETTE, and records of several Virginia counties including Fluvanna and Accomack. Also included are carbon copy typescripts for Staple's work, A GUIDE FOR GENEALOGISTS (1VF50W42) written in 1925 and AMUSEMENTS, DIVERSIONS AND GAMES OF EARLY LEXINGTON (1VF50W48) written in 1935 (bound with hard cover). The unprocessed papers (184M23t) contain genealogical materials, typed copies of historic documents similar to the processed papers. 1M53M12: chronologically arranged. Bradford, John, 1747-1830.
