in appendix E, the Special Collections and Archives Department,
R Margaret I. King Library, has in its custody the Goodman-Paxton
Papers consisting of personal correspondence files of George H.
Goodman, State Administrator of the Work Projects Administra-
tion in Kentucky. This collection consisting of four cubic
feet and four bundles, includes WPA correspondence, personal
correspondence and Financial papers prior to l930, First
Annnal Report of the Second District, 1935-1956, semimonthly
and monthly narrative reports from September 1935 through
February 1937, loose 8x10 photographs, a nine volume set
entitled accomplishment of the Works Progress Administration
in Kentucky, and four photograph scrapbooks. Microfilm copies
of the narrative reports, annual report, and WPA correspondence
are available at the Archives Branch. (See series 69.) The
University of Louisville also has a collection of WPA project
papers. The largest portion, estimated at 35,000 single pieces
of paper, consists of handwritten and typewritten notes taken
from interviews, books, newspapers, journals, and public and
private manuscripts for a project that produced a monograph
entitled Medicine and Its Development in Kentucky. There are
also working papers for the Writers' Project publication
Centennial History of the University of Louisville.
The Archives Branch has custody of additional WPA material
which was accessioned in other record groups. Periodical report
sheets from the Education Project are with other records of
’ the Jefferson County Board of Education. The Department of
Military Affairs sponsored a Veterans Indexing Project. Material
from that project, along with the sponsor's copies of other
project proposals and related materials are housed at the
Archives Branch. Files of the Kentucky State Library contain
material related to the Pack Horse Library Project sponsored by
the State Library.
WPA related records may be found among the records of
virtually any state or local government agency or department
that had dealings with the WPA. Supplements to this inventory
will be issued as necessary to describe WPA records that may be
accessioned by the Archives Branch in the future.
