Collection Overview

Biography / History
Marie Hochstrasser received her BA in Applied Arts from the University of California, and her Masters Degree in Art Education/Textile Research from the University of Oregon. She studied under artists Jack Lenore Larson and Helena Hernmarck.
Hochstrasser taught at Transylvania University from 1960-1964, conducted workshops in stitchery, fiber techniques, and weaving from 1966-1970, taught at the University of Kentucky from 1970-1979, and was a visiting instructor at Asbury College in 1978.
Not only an educator in the arts, Hochstrasser participated and was influential in several arts programs in the Bluegrass Region. She actively represented arts in the region both nationally and globally. In 1960, Hochstrasser helped establish the Southeast Region Assembly of the American Craft Council and contributed to the planning of conferences and Spotlight exhibits in 1978, 1984, 1996, and 2006. In 1961, she helped with the incorporation of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, later serving as a board-member and president, and eventually becoming a lifetime member. Hochstrasser also became a member of the Lexington Art League in 1961, serving as a board member from 1972-1976, president from 1973-1975, and eventually becoming a lifetime member. In 1974, she served as a delegate for the Kentucky Partners to Ecuador; and in 1978, as a delegate to Kyoto, Japan, representing the state of Kentucky for the World Craft Council Conference. Hochstrasser also represented Kentucky for the Handweavers' Guild of America and was a docent for the University of Kentucky Art Museum from 1993-1995.
Hochstrasser is considered the "founding mother," of the Lexington Fiber Guild, and served as both president and treasurer. She was on the advisory panel and served as Vice President of the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft. In 2005, she helped to found the Bluegrass Printmakers Co-op.
Marie Hochstrasser received many awards for her artwork and activity in the arts. She was awarded the TIP Grant to bring arts to 4th and 5th graders in Jessamine County Schools in Kentucky. In 2005, she won the Rude Osolnik Award and was a Kentucky Crafted Emeritus honoree.
Marie Hochstrasser owned three businesses, Yarn & Fiber Art and Yarn, Fiber Studio, and Kentucky Looms & Wheels Outlet. She wrote several articles for Arts Across Kentucky magazine, and her artwork has been exhibited in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Massachusetts, and California. She donated her entire textile library to The Kentucky School of Craft at Hazard Community College, in Hindman, Kentucky.
Scope and Content
The Marie Hochstrasser papers (dated 1929-2016, undated; 19 cubic feet; 45 boxes and 6 folders) consist of the professional and personal material of art educator and textile expert Marie Hochstrasser. The papers include posters, correspondence, awards, weaving samples, research materials, articles, photographs, memoranda, and video and audio cassettes that pertain to fifty years of community and visual arts in the Bluegrass Region, focusing in weaving, fibers, and textiles. Groups represented in her papers include the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, the Kentucky Arts Council, the Kentucky Arts and Craft Foundation, Kentucky Craft Marketing, the American Craft Council-Southeast Assembly, the Fiber Guild of Kentucky, the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, the Lexington Arts and Cultural Council, and the Lexington Art League. Of particular interest in the collection are Hochstrasster's "Decade scrapbooks", which contain collected material for different arts groups around the state of Kentucky.
Additions were made to the collection in 2013 and 2016. They are included in the collection as the series titled, Accession 2013ms0664 and Accession 2016ms044. In both series, the materials are ordered alphabetically and include many files similar to the original collection. Of particular note in are the posters, photographs, and slides of various art related events in Kentucky and video cassettes of Hochstrasser's appearances on local programming.
