The Cozine family members have often attempted to trace their family history to Anneke Jans from Holland. Anneke Jans came to America around 1630, settled on a farm in New Amsterdam (situated in lower Manhattan), died in 1663 and provided in her will for the division of the proceeds of the farm. The farm transferred through many hands, eventually fell to the crown and was subsequently leased to Trinity (Protestant Episcopal) Church in New York City. The descendents of Anneke Jans have often sued the Trinity Church Corporation for the disputed land. Much of the correspondence in the collection is from Jacqueline Bull, who was head of the Special Collections department at the University of Kentucky Libraries (1946-1976) and who was joint editor with Carolyn R. Hammer of the published version of John C. Cozine's diary, THE DAY-BOOK ACCOUNT OF JOHN C. COZINE. The significant item of this collection is a diary authored by John C. Cozine which documents a trip (including a careful account of expenditures) from Harrodsburg, Ky. to New York City made by Cozine in 1828. The purpose of the trip was to represent the family in a suit regarding the Trinity Church property in lower Manhattan claimed by the family to once have been owned by Wolfert Webber to whom the Cozines claimed direct ancestry. The diary specifically mentions Wolfert Webber who had, in the past, been linked to Anneke Jans, an early settler of New York (ca. 1630) who initially owned the Trinity Church property. These materials also include a variety of documentation (correspondence, photographic copies of genealogical excerpts from different sources and historical sketches) and research carried out in 1968 and 1974 on establishing a link between the Cozine family to Wolfert Webber and Anneke Jans of Amsterdam. Some of the documentation work was done by staff at the University of Kentucky Libraries for the purpose of verification before publishing the diary. Arranged somewhat chronologically. Cozine, John.
