Abstract

The Urey Woodson papers contain the correspondence and papers of Urey Woodson, dating primarily from 1929 to 1939. There are many letters from newspapermen written during 1929-1930, on the occasion of Woodson's retirement, about his long newspaper career.

Biography/History

Urey Woodson was born in Madisonville, Ky. He had a long and varied dual career in newspaper publishing and politics. Woodson was editor and publisher of the Owensboro Messenger from 1888 to 1929, when he retired from the newspaper business. He was active in the Democratic Party at both the state and national levels for an even longer period of time. Woodson actively supported the careers of William Jennings Bryan, William Goebel, and Alben Barkley. He served on the Democratic National Committee from 1896 to 1916, and again from 1924 to 1928. He was committee secretary from 1904 to 1912. He was rewarded for his services to Franklin Roosevelt in the election of 1932 with the post of Alien Property Commissioner, a position he held from 1933 to 1939. Woodson published a biography of William Goebel, The First New Dealer, in 1939, shortly before his death.

Scope and Content

The Urey Woodson papers contain correspondence dating primarily from 1929 to 1939. There are many letters from newspapermen written during 1929-1930, on the occasion of Woodson's retirement, about his long newspaper career. There are letters from Kentucky and national Democratic politicians and powerbrokers. Woodson corresponded frequently with Alben Barkley and Cordell Hull during and after the 1932 election, James A. Farley, Roosevelt's campaign manager, and many others. There are a few letters from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Happy Chandler, Young E. Allison, Josephus Daniels, Keen Johnson, Arthur Krock, Ruby Laffoon, H.L. Mencken, and Lowell Thomas.

Woodson's considerable correspondence with friends such as Jesse Ricks and George A. Cooke frequently includes political gossip. Much of the material from 1938 and 1939 relates to Woodson's gathering of materials for his book on William Goebel, The First New Dealer. There are also typescripts of speeches and newspaper columns and a small amount of printed matter in the collection. The collection includes a photograph of the Democratic National Committee from 1912.
