Richard Mentor Johnson (1780-1850), a native Kentuckian, was the ninth Vice President of the United States under Martin Van Buren. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate and a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives.
Written and signed by Richard Johnson Mentor, this letter recommends Thomas Barbour of Virginia as a Surgeon's Mate or Lieutenant in the Marine Corps to United States Secretary of the Navy, Paul Hamilton. The letter includes the signatures of John Dawson and Benjamin Howard, both members of the United States House of Representatives.
