As to one of the writers who asked how many of Coach Hall's players were in the NBA? So What??? How many of Dean Smith's have degrees? Chuck Verderber and Bob Guyette are studying to be dentists. Jack Givens works in Insurance, Dwayne Casey and Reggie Warford are assistant coaches. Joe Dean Jr. is a head coach. G.J. Smith, Jerry Hale, Larry Stamper are teachers. I can go on and on. I wonder if any of Dean Smith's players are dentists, teachers engineers etc. I am sure some are. But I doubt if the percentage is equalled to Coach Hall's. I know schools such as Harvard and Yale are higher. I am speaking of those who are sports schools.
As to the players, Sam you are the greatest. Keep up your good spirit. We'll get another shot at Alabama. You'll get them. Kenny, you're the best pure athlete I know I've ever seen. (And I've seen Mike Rozier, James Worthy, Lonnie Smith, Joe Cribbs.) You'll be a great one. James, your shot will come, stay calm and follow through. Winston, well Sir Winston, keep banging 'em around, we really did need you at UK. Good luck to all the seniors in your chosen field.
To all the players lets go get them in Nashville and the NCAA.
To Coach Hall. Listen brother, I'd have ulcers if I were you. You take all the blame for the losses when most losses are just circumstances beyond your control (unreal shooting, referee's missed calls or wrong calls). When we win it was Bowie, Turpin, Walker etc. Today we hammered LSU. LSU will not remember today, being embarrassed. Keep up your superb work. If we got rid of you, we'd be lost.
To all true blue suporters. Let's give these guys our full-fledged support. When we make it to the Final Four, we will show Dean Smith who a real coach is. It'll be UK, Houston, North Carolina and Nevada-Las Vegas. With UK and UNC meeting for the finals. UK by two on a last second shot by Jim Master from 22.
Seriously, we have THE basketball program. Everyone compare their school to UK and their players. Let's be true-blue fans and show them our class.
Sincerely,
Greg Hoover Cookville, Tn.
After six sessions of Southeastern Conference Tournament action since its renewal in 1979, the Kentucky Wildcats stand at the top.
Six different clubs have won the title, but UK is the only team which was successful in winning both the tourney and the regular season title in the same year.
Now, six years later, Kentucky is the leader in overall winning percentage involving tournament games. Kentucky has compiled a 10-5 mark during the six-year period for a .667 percentage. Second belongs to Alabama at 9-5 for a .643 percentage.
Kentucky has been even more dominant, thanks to participating in
the championship game four of the six years. No other team has appeared in the finals more than twice. Georgia and Alabama have advanced to the finals twice. Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee have been in the Final once each.
In total winning percentage, Georgia is third at 7-5 for a .583 clip while Tennessee is fourth at 6-5 for a .545 mark. Playing .500 ball are Ole Miss (5-5) and Auburn (6-6) while LSU (4-5) is at .444 and Vanderbilt (4-6j is winning at a .400 clip. Florida (2-6) owns a .250 percentage and Mississippi State (1-6) at .167 round out the league's teams.
TURPIN IN TRAFFIC...Melvin Turpin puts up a shot over a BYU defender in NCAA Second Round action. The Cats come home to face Louisville this week.
From 5
of this year, he is just now becoming an enthused participant. He is fired up and looking forward to every practice and game with enthusiasm. I hope our players respond to his leadership."... Is Hall surprised at the total turnaround by Beal in the last six weeks? "I am more pleased than surprised. I had hoped he would come around this way. I knew we needed him." He says Beal has been giving his team everything you look for from a point guard. By the way, Dicky proved in the SEC tourney that his scarred knees can take daily grind. In three days, he played 117 out of a possible 120 minutes. . .
While Hall likes the frame of mind of this team, he was not saying they had a better chance of making the Final Four, than say the '83 club. "We had a good team last year. They had good tournament success. They won big over Ohio, then they defeated an Indiana team which had beaten us earlier. We played fine against Louisville except for the press. We still came within the last 16 seconds of going to the Final Four. If this team does better than that, I will be very pleased" ... Hall feels a key to winning in NCAA play is simply doing what you have done best all year. Teams have little time to prepare for opponents, especially in round one. "You have to rely on basic fundamentals to carry you. You can't adjust each game to an opponent. Be solid in what
you do, then make what game adjustments you have to make" . . . The press was a major problem for UK in the middle of the season but the Cats seemed to solve the matter lately. Count on them seeing it again soon. When Hall was asked if his team's 'press psychosis' was over, he said "you never know. One mistake and it can get contagious. We look good now though.'' A press can work on a team's psychic if it gets going. So you have to cut it off before it spreads. . . Before the season, Hall said he felt this team's schedule was as tough as any. Now it's over, how does he rate it? Of UK's 30 games entering NCAA play, 15 were against teams playing in the NCAA. Six more were against NIT teams. "That is what we expected," said Hall. Wonder if any team could match that?...Hall got his share of the net in the ceremonies after the SEC tournament win. He cut off a piece to save for a display he is fixing for his grandson, Jeffery Derrickson, 15 months old. The SEC tourney was Jeffery's first game... Hall feels the only problem with playing a tournament at home can be "pressure and overconfidence." He says a team can think they have a tourney won just because it is home. UK has lost its last two postseason tournament games at home (NCAA and NIT). Nevertheless, Joe wanted no alibi's. "The good far outweighs the bad," he said of playing in Rupp.
MAKING LITTLE SENSE: It's hard for me to figure out how Melvin Turpin makes every AU-SEC first team and Sam Bowie make none and even one third team All-SEC, then Bowie turns around and makes second team All-America and Turpin third team. So Sam is not one of the best ten players in the league but is one of the best in the country? Is the SEC that tough, are the SEC voters that naive or has Sam's layoff given him so much publicity he benefitted by it nationally?... One NBA general manager whose team is below .500 this year has said privately that his team could win the NBA with Bowie. Another club which supposedly cherrishes Big Sam is the 76'ers. They need a forward and Sam is from PA. Whether Sam or Melvin goes first in the draft will depend on if the team needs a pure scoring center or a versatile big man. . .Former Cat Jack. Givens, who drilled in 41 in UK's last NCAA title game in '78, recently talked about UK's chances in '84: "I look for them in the Final Four. If they do get there, I think they will win it. Dicky was the missing link. Until he came back, I did not think they would win it. He made more difference than I thought he would. Their inside game is so strong, that will make a difference when the chips are down. And this team seems to play better against good competition." Jack made that statement before knowing UK would be playing at home iu the Mideast. He did
point out that he thinks it is vital UK doesn't get far behind, because their catchup ability is not as good as others. That also has changed, somewhat, with Beal's emergence. NCAA REPRESENTATIVES
