Johnson Rallies M-ville
After a shaky start, number three Madisonville came on strong in the second half to down ninth-ranked Louisville Doss 59-54. Madisonville entered the game 31-1, Doss finished its year 26-7.
Doss used its quickness and Madi-sonville's poor shooting to open up a 23-13 lead after a 12-2 spurt. Madisonville slowly worked its way back into the game and trailed by just two at the half.
Richard Johnson then moved from outside to inside the second half and sparked the Maroons by scoring 11 of his 14 points after intermission. His basket gave his team a 36-34 lead and they never trailed again.
Johnson, who will play football for Eastern next year, was one of the four Maroons in double figures. Joe Curry, the highly-touted football player who has signed with UK, scored 12 points and had a game-high 10 rebounds.
Spence Shipley led Doss with 16 points. All-State candidate James Tyler was held to four points and five boards. Madisonville hit nine of 17 shots the second half and outrebound-ed Doss 37-29.

special over the years and there was a major one in the second game. Number-one ranked Newport Central Catholic entered the game 33-1 (undefeated against Kentucky teams) while Scott County was the only team with a losing record at 13-16.
The result? The bigger Scott County team won 59-52, thanks to a fine performance by 6-4 sophomore Frank Persley and poor shooting by Catholic.
Persley has been heralded the state's best sophomore and he lived up to that, scoring 26 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Meanwhile, Newport hit just 38.9 percent from the field and 40 percent (six of 15) from the line. Leading scorer Jim Pangello, a hustling 5-7 guard, was four of 19.
Catholic did keep it close. They trailed by one after the first quarter and at the half. Scott still led by just two after three quarters and Persley already had 18.
Catholic Coach Gary Schulte got a technical between quarters. Persley hit one of two technical shots and then followed with a three-point play. The lead was six and Catholic had not had possesssion.
At 4:22, Newport got within two. Then center Bob Schenck missed four straight free throws. Suddenly, Scott led by 49-42 and it was all but over.

Logan County, behind the strong play of senior forward Fred Tisdale and clutch free throw shooting by Gary Barker, held off a very patient Meade County team by the score of 57-54. Barker, a 5-9 reserve guard, spoiled Meade's chances of an upset, when he hit two free throws with 35 seconds remaining in the game.
Meade County frustrated Logan County in the early going with its patient pattern offense. But, an aggressive full-court press late in the second quarter gave the Cougars a three-point lead at the half.
The lead see-sawed most of the second half with the biggest scoring margin only five points. The turning point came when Logan Coach Gerald Sinclair inserted three guards - Tim Viers, Henry Jones and Gary Barker -to full court press. The strategy worked as Logan forced Meade into crucial turnovers in the fourth quarter. Barker then put the game away with his free throws, which gave Logan a 55-50 lead.
Logan's Fred Tisdale, one of the state's top players, struggled in the first half with his shooting, but had a game-high 13 rebounds, and finished with 21 points. Meade star Jim Yates, 6-8 senior, went head-to-head with Tisdale and finished with 22 points and six rebounds. Meade, the Fifth
Region representative making its first Sweet Sixteen appearance, finished 16-12.
Devils Gets Scare
Tournament favorite Henry Clay found out how tough it would be to defend its title by escaping with a 70-69 victory over Pulaski County. Chip Rupp, grandson of the legendary Adolph Rupp, who sank two pressure free throws with 19 seconds left in the game.
Pulaski County's senior forward Todd Wood had a superb game and finished with a game-high 32 points and seven rebounds.
Pulaski County looked like they were going to pull off a big upset in the first half. They ran off to an early 8-0 lead. But Henry Clay, despite only 30 percent shooting in the first half, only trailed by 30-28 at halftime. All-State center Steve Miller had a horrible shooting first half and only had seven points at the half.

In the second half, Henry Clay's full court press haunted Pulaski County. The Devils' Roy Moment stole the ball and converted a layup to give Henry Clay a four-point lead midway into the third quarter. But, Pulaski didn't fold, and had a four-point lead midway into the end of the third quarter on a Steve Molen layup.
The fourth quarter saw the teams match baskets. Wood was virtually unstopable for Pulaski. With 33 seconds left in the game, he swished an 18-foot jumper that tied the game at 67. The Maroons chose to foul Rupp [Continued On Next Page]
