with only 19 seconds remaining. Rupp calmly sank both of them and when Wood's 12-foot jumper banked off with eight seconds remaining, Henry Clay had withstood Pulaski's upset bid.
Guard Jeff Blandon iced the game, when he made one of two free throws with three seconds left on the clock. Shannon Fraley's uncontested layup at the buzzer made the final margin of victory one point, 70-69.
Pulaski County, from the 12th Region, hit 57 percent from the field and 83 percent from the charity stripe but it just wasn't enough as they fell to 25-8 on the season.
Third Session Smith Keys M.C. Napier
14th Region's M. C. Napier overcame a five-point deficit in the last 1:09 of play and went on to win a thrilling one-point, controversial, victory. Napier's Mike Smith's eight-foot bank shot with six seconds left advanced the Navejos into the quarterfinal round.
The controversy arose when Napier reserve guard Estill Neece and Johnson Central substitute Charlie Preston started tussling with 15 seconds remaining in the game. Neece was trying to draw a foul call to send Preston to the line. Apparently, the referee didn't see Neece foul Preston intentionally and called a double foul on the players. Instead of shooting free throws, Johnson Central found itself in a jump ball situation because of the ruling.

Central got the tip, but was called for an over-and-back violation and, thus, turned the ball back over to M.C. Napier. Smith's clutch basket gave Napier a one-point lead with only six seconds remaining. Central's Henry Meek's despiration 30-footer fell short of the rim at the buzzer.
Both teams played at a rapid pace in the first half. With Johnson Central taking a 14-point lead at the end of the first quarter 20-6. M.C. Napier fought back and closed Central's gap at halftime, 36-33.
The third quarter witnessed the sizzling shooting of Central's Meek. Held to four points at halftime, Meek exploded for 13 third quarter points. This propelled the Eagles to a five-point lead? 58-53.
Fourth quarter action saw Johnson Central miss three straight bonus opportunities late in the game, which resulted in M.C. Napier getting back into the game. Larry Napier's basket after the last of Central's three missed free throws set up the controversial last seconds.
After losing the heartbreaker, 15th Region Johnson Central fell to 24-7.
Red Devils Fail
Shooting 24 more free throws than Owensboro, Clay County blew out the favored Red Devils 80-60. The game was very unusual because it was the tournament's only blow out.
Clay County, riding the strong inside play of Sammy Lee, Sean Pennington, and Eddie Smith, never trailed at any point during the game. Clay was also aided by the fact that Owensboro only received 10 points from starting guards Marcus Robinson and David Hogg.
Clay raced out to a 15-7 first quarter lead. When Owensboro made a run at them and cut the lead to three, Clay answered back and moved its lead back to nine points, 27-18, with 3:25 left in the first half. Pennington led Clay with nine points and five rebounds at the half. Owensboro's Tim Johnson paced the Devils for the half, also with nine points and five rebounds.
Midway through the third quarter, Clay opened its lead to 10 points with Eddie Smith's layup with 3:50 left in the quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, the Tigers scored the first four points and coasted the rest of the way on to a 20-point victory.
Owensboro, making its fourth consecutive appearance to the Sweet Sixteen, was hampered by 40 percent field goal shooting. The Red Devils finished the season at 22-7.

Overtime Ousts Marshall
In a game that was played at a torrid pace, Jeff Royce's ten-foot bank shot with a minute left in overtime gave Bourbon County a 65-62 victory over Marshall County. Marshall had two chances in the overtime period, but Jerry Powell missed a jumper and

Barry Goheen lost the ball out of bounds with only three seconds left.
Goheen was red hot in the first half for Marshall, with 21 points. However, Bourbon shaded him in the second half. He scored only six points in that half and the overtime period. Bourbon's Jeff Graves had 10 points and Tracy Thomas seven rebounds and off-balance 10-footer hit the back of deadlocked at 33.
Both teams played at a very fast tempo, with the lead changing hands several times in the second half. Late in the game, both teams had a chance of winning the game in regulation. Both Royce and Goheen missed the front end of a bonus free throw situation in the last 30 seconds of the game. Goheen missed his with nine seconds left, Royce missed his with only four seconds remaining.
Marshall County, the First Region's representative, had its 23-game winning streak snapped and finished 24-5 for the season.

the rim as time ran out and Ballard held on for a 47-46 win. Ballard's John White could have clinched the game with a bonus opportunity, but he missed and Taylor's shot missed. Taylor led Boyd in scoring with a game-high 23 points.
Ballard looked like it was going to put 16th Region champ Boyd County away early in the first half. Full-court pressure defense and zone traps gave Boyd fits the entire half. A Demetrius Franklin basket late in the second quarter gave Ballard a nine-point lead, at 30-21. Boyd County didn't help its own cause by shooting only 40 percent at the free throw line.
The momentum started to change in the third quarter, with Taylor scoring nine points for Boyd. The Lions outscored Ballard 15-5, and only trailed by one at the end of the quarter.
With 4:40 left in the game, Ballard's Mike Kitchen put in a James Wright miss and the Bruins had a 43-38 lead. But Boyd never did quit. Boyd's Ken Frailey made two free throws with 2:04 remaining, and cut Ballard's lead to
