20 Tzoenty—seventh Annual Report of the REMARKS: Vetch is doing fairly well where tried. Seems to be a little slow to make growth enough to turn under in the spring. It must be inoculated in Kentucky, and will not be as valuable as crimson clover because the latter is so much more easily grown. Sweet Clover. Furthermore our people believe that it is not much more easily grown than alfalfa, and they prefer alfalfa. Red Clover. All sown with nurse crop _____ _ __,_____,___.___.._....__... failures All sown alone in fall _,._, _ ,____,__,,,___,,_,,,_,,..,,. successful ‘ REMARKS: Red clover during the past twoyears has been almost a total failure. lf we can get our people to sow it alone in the fall of the year, I think we can handle the crop. However, it is so important in a rotation with corn and small grains, that we were hoping to be able to grow it with a nurse crop by using large amounts of limestone. This, how- ever, has not been as satisfactory as we would like. It may be that growing barley in place of wheat will help us solve the problem. Experimental work in the state does not give us much consolation, so far as the effectiveness of lime is concerned. in growing red clover. Cowpeas and Soy-Beans.
