40 Twenty-seventh Annual Report of the
of Lot 2 were satisfactory, but they were not as good as the ·
gains of Lot 3, where corn meal was supplemented with ‘
distillers’ dried grains. The results of this experiment show
that distillers’ dried grains is not well relished by the hog, t
and that it is not as satisfactory a feed for hogs on pasture
as is corn alone, or a mixture of corn meal five parts and
distillers’ dried grains one part. Distillers’ dried grains
make a very good supplement to corn, in the proportion
mentioned, in the feeding of hogs in the dry lot. 7 ·
As there were many farmers who sold their wheat last
fall as low as 75 cents a bushel, this department conducted
an experiment to determine the value of wheat as a feed for
pigs, as well as to determine the best form in which it may
be fed. Lot 1, consisting of ten pigs, was fed whole wheat
soaked for twenty-four hours; Lot 2, consisting of nine pigs,
was fed ground wheat dry; Lot 3, consisting of ten pigs,
was fed ground wheat soaked for twelve hours; and Lot 4,
consisting of ten pigs, was fed ground wheat fourteen parts, T
and digester tankage one part, soaked for twelve hours.
These pigs averaged 105 pounds, and were fed in the dry lot
for a period of seventy days. The whole wheat waspurchased
at 80 cents a bushel, and the ground wheat at 86 cents a
bushel. All the pigs in this experiment were sold in Lexing-
ton at $8.50 per hundredweight. The pigs receiving whole
wheat soaked for twenty-four hours made an average daily
gain of 1.5 pounds, requiring 425.8 pounds of wheat for each
hundred pounds of gain; estimating pork at $8.50 per hundred-
weight. each bushel of wheat fed this lot realized $1.19. The
lot of hogs receiving ground wheat dry made an average daily
gain of 1.72 pounds, producing 16.02 pounds of pork for each
bushel of wheat eaten. The wheat fed the pigs in this lot
realized $1 36 a bushel. The lot receiving ground wheat soaked
for twelve hours made an average daily gain of 1.68 pounds,
producing 15.65 pounds of pork for each bushel of wheat
eaten. Wheat fed these pigs realized $1.33 a bushel. The
lot receiving ground wheat fourteen parts and digester tank-
age one part. soaked for twelve hours. made an average
daily gain of 1.78 pounds, producing 16.69 pounds of pork
