Under this department of animal husbandry there is here-
with submitted the report of the Veterinary Department,
including the work of the hog cholera serum laboratory for
the year 1914, Robert Graham, in charge. _
To stop the spread of hog cholera and reduce the losses
from this disease by the injection of serum is one of the most
important problems which the Experiment Station is attempt-
ing to solve. ln order to make this work effective, experts
from the Experiment Station go to the various hog raising
counties and give demonstrations in the proper method of
administering the serum and outline the essentials in sanita-
tion. Veterinarians and farmers by this method acquaint
themselves with the proper use of serum in the control of l
this disease. The serum is manufactured at the Experiment
Station and sold to the swine breeders at the cost of produc-
tion. No charge is made for the services of the experts.
The increased demand for serum and expert service in
this work indicates its almost universal adoption in the State.
Farmers in eighty-three counties, out of a possible one
hundred and twenty, have employed serum in the protection
of their herds. Farmers are urged not to delay this treat-
ment, as in sick herds the results are not encouraging.
During the year 1914, 3,238,835 cubic centimeters of hog
cholera serum were produced on the Experiment Station
farm. Eight hundred and forty-six immune hogs were
hypcrimmunized, and virus was drawn from 826 shotes
sulfering from hog cholera and which had been previously
inoculated for the production of this product. The receipts
from serum and virus during the year amounted to $39,824.
