It had become very evident to me at the beginning of 1909
that the rate of development of the corn-ear worm was
influenced very decidedly by temperature and food conditions.
Rearings showed that the time required for complete devel-
· ment from egg to adult was just about one month and three
or four days. lf, therefore, the insects come forth as adults
in the middle of June, as some of them undoubtedly do,
