58 Twenty-seventh Annual Report of the
the cost of construction of the various types of poultry
houses, now in use on the Experiment Station farm.
XV. Mr. D. D. Slade and the Head of the Department .
have on several occasions made trips to farmers’ institutes,
and last summer the department had charge of the poultry
show at the Blue Grass Fair and assisted with the poultry
show at the State Fair.
XVI. During the summer of 1914, the L. & N. Railroad _
supplied a train of two coaches and an engine which was
operated for the purpose of increasing interest in fruit and
poultry raising in the mountainous districts traversed by that
railway. The train was on the road for over a week and
this department supplied eight varieties of chickens and a
speaker in the person of Mr. D. D. Slade.
XVII. During Farmers’ Week in 1914, the Experiment
Station held a most successful poultry show. The Experi-
ment Station and the State Fair in cooperation purchased .
$1,800 worth of beautiful wire coops which are used annually
at the Kentucky State Poultry Show, held at the Experi-
ment Station each January and at the State Fair, each
September. The first show was held at the University in
January, 1913, and exhibited 450 birds and caused consider- ‘
able interest throughout the State. The poultry and agri-
cultural press mentioned the show in laudatory terms, and
last September the Kentucky Poultry Association showed its
appreciation by donating $25 in money for premiums at this
show. This is the only poultry show that is so favored by
that Association.
