The following is a brief report of the work of the Chemical
Department for the calendar year 1914.
SOILS. Chemical analyses have been made of 69 samples
of soil from Graves Countyin connection with the soil survey
_ of that county by the Experiment Station. For the soil
survey of Franklin County, in cooperation with the Ken-
tucky Geological Survey, 56 samples have been analyzed.
All these analyses have been incorporated in the reports by
Mr. S. C. Jones on these two counties, the manuscripts of
which reports are ready for publication in bulletin form.
The report on Franklin County will also be published in the
reports of the Kentucky Geological Survey. Chemical
analyses have been made, also, of 20 samples from the
Experiment fields of the Experiment Station and of 36
samples from 15 counties, sent in by farmers, making a
total of 181 quantitative chemical analyses of soils. Besides
these, 116 samples of soil, from 61 counties, have been
tested qualitatively for acidity, calcium carbonate and phos-
phorus as an aid in giving advice on the use of ground
limestone and phosphate. The manuscript for a bulletin on
the chemistry of the soils of the principal soil areas in the
State is now in preparation and is nearly ready for pub-
lication.
LIMESTONES. Partial analyses of 240 samples of limestone
from 58 counties have been made for farmers and county
agents for the purpose of advising the owners and users as
to their fitness for agricultural purposes. In this connection
much attention has been given to devising a short method
for the analysis of agricultural limestones, including a rapid
