The department has made a number of examinations of
V feeding stuffs suspected of being the cause of death of live
stock with the result that a considerable number of feeding _
stuffs were found to contain poisonous weed seeds, fungi and
badly damaged grains.
r During the year, 1543 different brands of feed were regis-
tered, representing 457 firms. Analyses have been made of
598 inspectors’ samples, 46 consumers’, 238 dealers’ and 36 · .
miscellaneous samples, making a total of 918 samples.
Besides this number, 129 untagged samples have been
examined microscopically.
During this period about three million labels have been
issued, representing a tonnage trade of about one hundred
and fifty thousand tons, or a business of over four million
dollars.
The results of the year’s work have been very gratifying.
Notwithstanding the extreme scarcity of feeding materials, - ·
and the great demand for same, the manner in which the
feed business has been conducted has never been better in
the history of the trade in the State. In fact, we have found
comparatively few instances where the law seems to have
been violated intentionally, and the manufacturers and
dealers have acted promptly in correcting the few irregular-
ities that we have found
